Fruché is an emerging Nigerian brand whose latest collection, ‘Venusians‘ aims to empower women through fashion. This new collection which made it debut at the Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2016 focuses on femininity and the new generation of strong, powerful African women.
According to the brand’s Creative Director, Frank Aghuno, the idea of naming the collection Venusians came from John Gray’s — ‘Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus’. “In science fiction and ufology, a Venusian is a native inhabitant of the planet Venus.” This is depicted via handpainted pop-art words and symbols by Nigerian artist Fred Aghuno of ‘Dricky Stickman’ whose artistry is seen on some of the pieces in the collection- T-shirts, shirts, jeans etc- and on the backdrop portraying a quirky version of venus.
Besides being inspired by aforementioned subject, the brand drew inspiration from a quote by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – “Gender as it functions today is a grave injustice. I would like today to ask that we begin to dream about and plan for a different world. A fairer world.” Which is why the collection features a juxtaposition of strong feminine and masculine silhouettes like an Aso-Oke version of a power suit, deconstructed denim, thigh high slits and plunging necklines. The former silhouettes which were originally designed for men while the later are typically feminine.
