1. Wizkid becomes first African artist to bag BRIT Billion award

Grammy award-winning Nigerian artist, Wizkid has become the first African musician to earn the BRIT Billion award for over 1 billion streams in the United Kingdom. The Starboy boss was presented with the award after his sold-out show at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Saturday.

Wizkid has sold millions of units in the UK, including Drake’s “One Dance” featuring him (Wizkid) and Kyla which is certified six times Platinum for selling over 3.6 units. “Energy” with Skepta and “Essence” with Tems are certified Platinum while “Come Closer” with Drake, and “Brown Skin Girl” with Beyoncé are certified Gold. Wizkid’s fourth studio album “Made In Lagos” is also certified Gold in the UK.

On Monday, July 31, Halle Bailey took to social media to announce her first solo single titled “Angel.” Fans were also able to get a taste of what to expect in a teaser trailer filled with footage of the Atlanta talent as a kid. “Angels make a way somehow,” her Instagram post read in regard to the effort, which arrives this Friday, August 4.

The new music comes after Halle’s breakthrough role as Ariel in “The Little Mermaid.” In addition to her exemplary acting in the 2023 live-action remake, she was also praised for her performances in “For The First Time” and “Part Of Your World,” the latter of which was a classic from the 1989 original animated film.

Congratulations are in order for 22-year-old Andile Mpisane who is about to be a father of four as his wife, Tamia Mpisane, has announced the couple is expecting baby number two. In the first week of July, rumors were rife that Tamia was pregnant. However, she shut down the rumor mill by clapping back at people saying she was expecting.

After seemingly trying and failing to conceal the pregnancy, Tamia took to Instagram on Monday to reveal she’s pregnant with a photo from a maternity shoot that showed her baby bump and expressed joy at the pending arrival of her second baby. “Blessed by the grace of God. Made from love, with love, to love. I can’t wait to meet you my love,” Tamia captioned the snap.

Serena Williams is getting closer to welcoming her second child! On Sunday, July 30, the star tennis athlete shared an exciting video on Instagram which highlighted what appears to be a gender reveal party. “Big reveal coming soon to my YouTube channel. What do you think I’m having?” she captioned the post. The compilation video shows scenes of the bash of the 23 Grand Slam champion, smiling and hugging party guests. Other moments feature her husband, Alexis Ohanian, and their 5-year-old daughter Olympia.

In another frame, Williams is next to her father, Richard Williams. For the fun party, Serena wore a cropped white t-shirt, a pink and white striped short mini skirt, and a double layer of pink and blue necklaces. She tied the look together with white sneakers. The mom-to-be built up the suspense of her reveal during the video’s last scene. The family can be seen looking at the sky as a colorful light display reads, “It’s A…”, as the words vanish.

5. Liverpool name Virgil van Dijk as new captain following Jordan Henderson’s exit

Liverpool have named Virgil van Dijk as their new club captain following Jordan Henderson’s departure for the Middle East. The club made the announcement on their official website with Trent Alexander-Arnold taking on the vice-captaincy from James Milner, who has joined Brighton. It follows former club captain Henderson’s exit from the club, with the England midfielder making a surprise move to the Saudi Pro League, joining Al-Ettifaq.

Van Dijk told the Liverpool website: “[It’s] a really proud day for me, for my wife, for my kids, my family. It’s been a special feeling and I can’t really describe it at this point. But it’s something that I’m really, really proud of. Obviously, I’m captain of Holland, that was already such a huge honor, a proud moment as well. But also to be the captain of Liverpool Football Club is something that I can’t describe at this point. It’s just something that makes me very proud and I will do everything in my power and what I can do to make everyone proud and happy with me and the football club.”
