2. Fans upset after Kanye West’s ‘Donda 2’ fails to release on time

Fans were shocked and surprised after they dropped large amounts to listen to Kanye West’s “Donda 2” — exclusive to his platform, Stem Player — and it has yet to be released. Announced via his social media channels last week, Ye said that his sequel album would not be featured on any of the major DSPs (Apple Music, Amazon, Spotify, YouTube). “Today artists get just 12% of the money the industry makes. It’s time to free music from this oppressive system. It’s time to take control and build our own,” he wrote.

Fans quickly dug into their digital wallets to fork over around $230 total for a Stem Player, which is being billed as “the first Yeezy tech product,” according to West, and to receive an advance copy of Donda 2. The move proved very lucrative for West, who alerted his followers that he had brought in $2.2 million in a single day from the gadgets. Fans are still hopeful the album will be released soon.

A post shared by LADYDU (@ladydu_sa)

Amapiano vocalist Lady Du has sworn she is moving in a new direction after she opened up about her management woes. Taking to Instagram, she revealed she did not know why she wasn’t getting booked. She alleged in a separate post that her manager, whom she didn’t name, was taking money from promoters behind her back. Du said she was not one to fight, but had to share her story for upcoming amapiano artists to be vigilant when hiring managers.

The amapiano hitmaker apologized to her fans for not dropping her EP and said she was going through a lot. She shared on Instagram the painful experience after revealing her manager has been treating her harshly. Industry colleagues rallied behind her and urged her to terminate the contract.

4. Tanzanian singer, Diamond Platnumz criticized over Confederate flag

Tanzanian musician Diamond Platnumz is being criticized online for featuring a Confederate flag in the video of his latest hit song. The Confederacy was the group of southern states that fought to keep slavery during the US Civil War — and the flags are seen as divisive and a symbol of racial tensions in the US. One of Diamond’s video scenes in the song “Gidi” has two of the flags displayed as he dances while donning a cowboy look. People on social media have reacted to the video as some criticized him while others tried to educate him.

5. Bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor makes history as the most decorated Black Winter Olympian

Elana Meyers Taylor of Douglasville, Ga. won her fifth Olympic medal Saturday, February 19, making her the most decorated Black athlete in Winter Olympics history and the most decorated woman in Olympic bobsledding according to reports. According to Team USA, on February 14, Meyers Taylor tied speed skater Shani Davis as the most decorated Black athlete in Winter Games history after winning her fourth Olympic medal in the inaugural monobob event.

Meyers Taylor, 37, broke the tie after winning bronze in the two-woman bobsled with teammate Sylvia Hoffman. With the addition of monobob, she’s the first women’s bobsledder to win two medals in a single Olympics and the fifth U.S. bobsledder to win two medals in a single Olympics.
