The Tea About TikTok’s Untyping Dating Trend

I
f you’re not a millennial or Gen Z, chances are you’ve become weary of these newly made-up terms on dating, and to be honest, everything else. TikTok has us all on our toes with an urban dictionary, scrolling through and trying to stay up to date. Speaking of dates, the dating world has gone wild, with incessant dating trends popping up from every angle. I bet you haven’t heard of the “untyping dating trend.” And yes, it has nothing to do with your typing skills.
We all have a “type,” and for years, may stay stuck in a cycle of dating this “type.” While this is good for order and boundaries, we might be limiting ourselves with this close-minded approach. Plus, it can familiarize us with toxicity and trauma. Little wonder why you attract the same kind of unwholesome relationships.
To be honest, most millennials are tired of these unrelenting dating trends, but who wants to be tagged stale, especially those still swimming frantically in the dating pool? Untyping doesn’t encourage dropping your standards and settling for less than life could offer. It simply suggests your partner could be on the other side of your rigid dating list (whether mental or physical).
What is the “untyping” dating trend?

Untyping simply means ditching your type and trying out other options. If you are on the TDH and chiseled team, nothing’s wrong with giving a light-skinned average-height brother a chance. We often get so warped in a mental idea of perfection that we miss the real deal. This trend, I believe, is to shake us out of the limits we created, and not to get us to lower our standards.
Why do we have a type?

Familiar grounds appear stable and comfortable. From our early relationships with our parents and/or caregivers to our backlog of exes, we tend to gravitate toward what we already know. We might have all heard the saying, “The devil you know is better than the angel you don’t know.” Even when detrimental, we unconsciously weed out unfamiliarity and swim through familiar tides. This isn’t entirely bad, but if your serial typing has not led to anything promising, then it’s time to review your choices.
Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Are you insane? No. Do you need to try new things? Yes. Is that a guarantee this new exploration will turn out profitable? No. But there’s a higher chance of achieving a different result.
The Untyping dating trend doesn’t require you to throw caution in the air and opt for individuals who are clearly a no-no. It’s one thing to adjust trivial requirements like physical appearances, but if your spirituality is precious to you, don’t “untype” your way into a lack of spiritual compatibility. Factors like your values should be off the negotiation table, untyping or not. This means you have to recapitulate your values and internalize them.
Benefits of untyping

Dating outside your type challenges you to reevaluate your mindset and exposes you to new dating possibilities. If you’re caught in a web of falling in love with a type that’s not good for you, the untyping dating trend can serve as a pattern-breaking option. The pressure to tick all the boxes is removed, and not knowing what to expect becomes a thrill that fuels passion.
Also, untyping widens your perception and experiences. You get to see the world outside your comfort zone. This trend doesn’t always promise to work out, but a different path increases your chances of getting this dating thing right.
Possible risks

Dating can be hard. It can sap all your energy and leave a trail of heartbreaks. Stepping into unfamiliar grounds will put you out there – unguarded and unsure. This is the reason why this trend is met with skepticism. Striking a balance is the key to everything, including untyping.
A final word
While it’s fine to be flexible with trivial things like physical appearance, nonnegotiables, like your religion, identity, and values, should be off the table. By all means, focus on dating a guy shorter than your ideal height. But for your future’s sake, be steadfast in your values.
