Edebiri’s portrayal of Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto in “The Bear” has garnered widespread praise. The show, which dives into the fast-paced and pressure-filled world of a Chicago family-run Italian beef sandwich shop, showcases Edebiri’s comedic timing and dramatic range. The AAFCA TV Honors celebrate excellence in television across various categories, recognizing both established and emerging talent within the Black community.

3. South Africa: Tyla and Makhadzi winners at BET Awards 2024

South Africa’s music scene was abuzz on Sunday night as two of its brightest talents, Tyla and Makhadzi, brought home honors at the prestigious BET Awards 2024.d at the Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, the awards ceremony celebrates excellence in Black entertainment and this year, South Africa had a front-row seat to the celebration.

The 22-year-old sensation, Tyla, fresh off her Grammy win in February, continued her meteoric rise by notching up two awards. Her infectious hit “Water” propelled her to victory in the Best New Artist category, while her global influence was recognized with the Best International Act award.

Makhadzi, known for her captivating stage presence and unique blend of musical styles, also had a reason to celebrate. Her birthday coincided with her win in the BET Viewers Choice: Best New International Act category. This victory further cements Makhadzi’s status as a powerhouse in the South African music industry and a rising star on the global stage.

4. Burna Boy receives a plaque for 1 billion UK streams

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar, Burna Boy has cemented his status as a global music icon, reaching a monumental milestone. On Saturday, June 29, during his sold-out show at the iconic London Stadium, he was presented with a BRIT Award plaque commemorating his achievement of surpassing one billion streams in the United Kingdom. This incredible feat places Burna Boy alongside his compatriot, Wizkid, as the only two African artists to ever reach this level of success in the UK market. The “African Giant,” as he’s fondly known, has consistently pushed boundaries, and his music continues to resonate with fans worldwide.

Burna Boy’s reign in the UK doesn’t stop at streaming numbers. He also holds the record for the highest-charting African album on the UK charts with his 2022 release, “Love, Damini,” which reached the coveted number-one spot. Furthermore, his London Stadium concert marked the second time he has sold out the massive 80,000-seat venue, solidifying his immense popularity amongst UK audiences.

5. Biniam Girmay becomes the first Black African to win Tour de France stage

Biniam Girmay of Intermarché-Wanty powered his way to a historic victory on stage 3 of the Tour de France, becoming the first Black African rider to win a stage in the prestigious cycling race. The Eritrean rider emerged from a chaotic bunch sprint in Turin, edging out Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) and Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Dstny) to claim a remarkable win. A late crash with just 3 kilometers remaining split the peloton, but a reduced group of around 40 riders battled for victory in a thrilling finale.

Girmay displayed exceptional timing and positioning, rocketing past rivals on the right side of the road to secure the win. This victory marks a significant milestone not just for the rider himself, but for African cycling as a whole.
