1. Serena Williams announces her retirement from tennis

It’s the end of an era. Serena Williams, one of the greatest athletes of all time, has announced she is retiring from tennis. In a cover story for Vogue published online on Tuesday, August 9, the 23-time Grand Slam Single champion said, “I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people.”

She also said she was “reluctant” to talk about moving on from tennis and added, “I can’t even have this conversation with my mom and dad. It’s like it’s not real until you say it out loud. It comes up, I get an uncomfortable lump in my throat, and I start to cry. The only person I’ve really gone there with is my therapist!” Williams did not say when her final game will be, but she did suggest on Instagram that the U.S. Open, which begins August 29, could be her final.

2. Tems makes history with fifth Billboard Hot 100 entry

Nigerian International sensation Tems has made history by becoming the Nigerian with the most entries on America’s Billboard Hot 100 chart. Tems made history with her fifth entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with Beyonce’s “Move” debuting at number 55 on the chart dated August 13, 2022.

The 27-year-old has now broken her four-entry tie with Afrobeats heavyweight Wizkid with whom she previously held the record for most Billboard Hot 100 entries by a Nigerian artist.

It was a night of laughter, love, and tears of joy when Oscar Mdlongwa, popularly known as Oskido, celebrated his recent academic achievement. The Kalawa Jazzmee record label owner and DJ recently completed a five-month Project Management study after enrolling at the University of Pretoria in February.

When announcing the completion of his course, Oskido tagged his close friend DJ Zinhle, saying she had promised to throw him a party in celebration of the milestone. DJ Zinhle, Mörda of Black Motion and media personality Unathi Nkayi were among the stars spotted at the black and gold-themed party.

4. ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ and ‘Blood Sisters’ director Biyi Bandele dies at 54

Biyi Bandele, co-Director of Netflix’s debut Nigerian original series “Blood Sisters” is dead. The prolific filmmaker died in Lagos on Sunday, August 7, according to a statement released by his daughter.

The shocking news comes barely weeks before the historical Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) premiere of Netflix and EbonyLife’s “Elesin Oba” which he directed and adapted for the screen. Bandele was renowned for directing the 2013 film adaptation of Chimamanda Adichie‘s classic novel “Half Of A Yellow Sun” starring Thandiwe Newton and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

5. Sanchez joins Marseille after Inter terminates contract of ex-Arsenal and Man Utd star

Alexis Sanchez has joined Marseille after Inter Milan terminated the winger’s contract by mutual consent. After joining Inter from Manchester United in 2019, the 33-year-old made 109 appearances across all competitions for the club and scored 20 goals. Sanchez helped Inter lift the Scudetto in the 2020-21 season and also picked up Supercoppa Italiana and Coppa Italia medals last term.

However, the Chilean international made just seven starts in Serie A in the 2021-22 campaign as he fell down the pecking order under Simeone Inzaghi. He is set to sign a two-year contract at Stade Velodrome, where he will link up with two more former Arsenal players Matteo Guendouzi and Sead Kolasinac, along with Gunners loanee Nuno Tavares.
