The still-contentious Golden Globes returned last night for their 2023 edition after a well-deserved hiatus. To celebrate, the celebrities dressed to the nines as classic glamor was on the menu.
Red Carpet Golden Globes 2023
The red carpet for the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards featured a medley of unique color combinations, patterns, and forms. The event, held on January 10, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, didn’t appear to be affected by the weather.
During Tuesday’s show, HFPA President Helen Hoehne alluded to the changes the organization has made to improve the diversity of its membership. “We commit to continue strengthening our partnership with Hollywood and with the worldwide fans who celebrate the best on film and television,” she said. “We will continue to support groups that amplify a variety of voices and continue to add representation to our organization from around the world as we did this past year.”
Like at every award ceremony, celebrities from all around the world adorned the carpet with a variety of designer clothing and brands. Each outfit that walked over the carpet conveyed a fashionable story, from the allure of sheer enhanced with glittering sequins to avant-garde designs paired with floral themes.
Colorful sequins, decorations, and sequin appliques were used to complete the more feminine styles. Gucci left a significant impression on the red carpet. In the same way that Jennifer Hudson’s gold metallic frock by C.D. Greene and Michelle Williams‘ frothy white dress with heaps of frills did, they both managed to combine drama and sophistication.
A sweeping floor-length skirt and a satiny bra top made up Anya Taylor-Joy’s yellow Dior outfit, which seemed both current and classic. Michelle Yeoh, who took home the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, wowed on the red carpet as well in Armani. And while statement necklaces were noticeably absent, our new favorite red carpet accessory styling has emerged: wearing rings over your gloves like Natasha Lyonne and Dolly De Leon.
Meanwhile, the men in attendance last night also made unique outfit choices, for instance the actor Jeremy Pope wore a timeless Dolce & Gabbana suit but with a modern touch thanks to the black leather trim. Andrew Garfield demonstrated that tailoring can still be exciting and make a statement while wearing an orange single-breasted suit by Zegna. In keeping with the atmosphere, host Jerrod Carmichael opened the event wearing a pink satin suit.

On the award side, it was a comparatively big night for diversity and “Abbott Elementary” earned the most nominations of any television show, five. Quinta Brunson and Tyler James Williams won awards for best actress in a TV series, musical, or comedy, and for best supporting actor in a TV series, respectively. Zendaya also won the award—her first—for best actress in a drama television series for her role in HBO Max’s hit show “Euphoria.” The Emmy-winning actor, 26, was not present to accept the award as she is currently filming the sequel of “Dune” in the Middle East.

Michelle Yeoh won the Golden Globe for best actress in a motion picture — comedy or musical. Yeoh took home the award for her starring role in the psychedelic comedy-drama “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once.” Yeoh is the second Asian actor to win in the category, the first being Awkwafina in 2020 for “The Farewell.”

“Naatu Naatu” from “RRR” won the Golden Globe for best original song, a big win in a stacked category. The Indian film has a huge following, but some might consider it a surprise win considering the competition. Some of the world’s biggest stars, including Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna, were nominated in the category. M.M. Keeravani collected the award on behalf of the three songwriters.
