1. Imo deputy speaker resigns

The Deputy Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Okey Onyekanma, has resigned. His letter of resignation was read by the speaker of the house during plenary on Tuesday. Onyekanma equally resigned as the Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business.

The plenary has not been concluded yet.

2. Protests against Ghana’s planned new voters’ register

Hundreds of demonstrators took the streets of Kumasi, Ghana, on Tuesday to protest against a planned new voters’ register.

The protesters, made up of opposition party supporters, say that the Electoral Commission’s plan is a ploy to manipulate the results of upcoming elections in favour of the governing New Patriotic Party.

They view the cost of the new voters’ register – which stands at $70m (£53m) – a waste of public funds. The Electoral Commission officials insist the current register in no longer fit for purpose because it is “bloated”.

Protesters say similar demonstrations will take place in the coming weeks in the capital, Accra.


3. American singer John Legend makes quiet visit to Nigeria to perform at an event in Lagos

Dapper in a white suit, John Legend was present at an event in Lagos on Monday, January 20, 2020, where he performed some of his hit records. John Legend made a quiet entry to Lagos on Sunday ahead of his performance at the THISDAY Awards 2020 on Monday at the Eko Hotel Convention Centre in Victoria Island.

It was a grand event which was to also mark the celebration of 25 years of THISDAY and the introduction of a new streaming service. Superstar model Naomi Campbell was also present at the event and took the stage alongside Obaigbena to announce the launch of the streaming service.

It was his wife Chrissy Teigen who first revealed that the singer was in Nigeria. “John went to Nigeria for a couple of days and I thought about going, purely to find Michael from 90 days, but…the enchilada has rendered me useless,” she wrote on Twitter.

Teigen’s revelation had Twitter buzzing as a host of people initially speculated as to why the R&B singer was in the country.

4. WHO to convene an emergency meeting as China virus spreads

A World Health Organization (WHO) emergency panel will meet this week to discuss a new SARS-like virus that has spread beyond China and that officials in Beijing have said is contagious between humans.

The new coronavirus strain, first discovered in the central city of Wuhan, has caused alarm because of its connection to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). SARS originated in southern China in 2002 and spread to Hong Kong and elsewhere in the world, infecting thousands of people. More than 800 people died.

The total number of people diagnosed with the new virus has risen to 218, with cases confirmed in Beijing, Shanghai and the southern province of Guangdong province. A third person died in Wuhan, the local health commission said.


5. World Cup: Nigeria draw Cape Verde, Liberia, CAR

Nigeria has been drawn in the same group with Cape Verde, Central African Republic and Liberia in the second round of Africa’s World Cup 2022 qualifiers. The draw took place at the Nile Ritz-Carlton, Egypt on Tuesday evening which was attended by some African football legends.

The Super Eagles will hope to manoeuvre their way past their rivals in Group C for a chance to feature in their seventh appearance in the tournament. Since making their debut in the quadrennial tournament in USA 1994, Nigeria has only failed once to qualify for the competition in 2006.
