Omoyele Sowore

The Department of State Services has released rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the February 2019 general elections, Mr Omoyele Sowore. His co-detainee, Adebayo Bakare, was also freed.

They were freed hours after Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court in Abuja had given the DSS 24-hour ultimatum to release the two men. Their lead defence counsel, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), confirmed this development to our correspondent on Thursday.

He said they were released about 7 pm on Thursday. “They were released about 30 minutes ago. They were released to one of our lawyers,” he said.

3. Emma Stone engaged to SNL writer Dave McCary after 2 years of dating

Emma Stone is engaged. Emma Stone’s longtime boyfriend Dave McCary revealed that they were engaged on Instagram on Wednesday, sharing a photo of the couple smiling excitedly as Stone showed off her new ring. McCary, 34, simply captioned the post, “?.”

The pair met when the Oscar-winning actress hosted SNL at the end of 2016 and starred in the sketch “Wells for Boys,” which McCary directed. While Stone and McCary are relatively private about their romance, the duo has been spotted together multiple times and enjoyed a date night in New York City in April, heading out for dinner in the city after SNL rehearsals. Stone hosted the April 13 episode of the variety show.

4. Dozens dead as migrant boat sinks off Mauritania coast

Migrants seeking passage

At least 58 people, including children, were killed after a boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized in the Atlantic Ocean off the West African nation of Mauritania, the UN’s migration agency said.

The perilous sea passage from West Africa to Europe was once a major route for migrants seeking jobs and prosperity. The sinking is one of the deadliest incidents since the mid-2000s when Spain stepped up patrols and fewer boats attempted the journey.

The boat carrying at least 150 people ran out of fuel and was stranded for days when approaching Mauritania before it capsised.

Everton manager Marco Silva faces the sack, with the club’s board expected to decide his future on Thursday – and former boss David Moyes under consideration as an interim replacement.

Toffees majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri was scheduled to arrive in Liverpool on Thursday afternoon to confirm a decision on the future of the 42-year-old Portuguese after the 5-2 thrashing in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool at Anfield left them in the relegation places.

He was asked about his future in the aftermath of Everton’s eighth defeat in 11 games and said: “I am not the right person to talk about this situation. You are asking me and I don’t have the answer.”

The answer may be delivered on Thursday, with Silva, who has been at Everton since May 2018, not expected to be in charge for Saturday’s game against Chelsea at Goodison Park.
