Here is a rundown of five of the hottest news topics…

1. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle go against royal protocol as they urge Americans to vote in the 2020 election

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry spoke out about how important it is to vote in the US election, branding it the “most important election of our lifetime.” But the couple is facing a huge backlash as members of the Royal Family are expected to remain politically neutral.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appeared on a Time 100 special hosted by US TV broadcaster ABC last night, where they urged people to exercise their democratic right to vote. But the two-minute-long video appears to have backfired as social media users have condemned the couple for interfering in US politics.

It is considered sacrosanct for members of the Royal Family to remain apolitical and in practice, they never participate in elections, by voting or stating a political allegiance. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior royals earlier this year in order to forge their own path away from the Royal Family.

2. Ghana: Airlines who land without COVID-19 tests face $3,500 fine per passenger

Effective today (September 22, 2020) at 6 pm, airlines who board passengers who do not possess PCR tests or disembark passengers with positive PCR tests at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra will be fined $3,500 per passenger.

Additionally, non-Ghanaians who test positive “may be refused entry and returned to the point of embarkation at a cost to the offending airline,” the Ghana Airports Company Limited said in its latest update on COVID-19 guidelines for the KIA.

The GACL update added that “Ghanaians will be allowed entry but subject to a 14-day mandatory quarantine” at a government-approved facility and at a cost to the passenger.

Local actress Linda Mtoba has decided to give back by empowering young children with the tools they need for a brighter future. On Tuesday, she announced that she was setting up a bursary fund for young children whose parents could not afford private schooling.

Through the recently launched Linda Mtoba Foundation, the star revealed that she will assist children and young people from disadvantaged communities. Taking to social media, the former “Isibaya” star unveiled her first project: the foundation is offering full and partial bursaries for private schools across KwaZulu-Natal.

4. Johnson & Johnson start stage three trial of single-dose COVID-19 vaccine

Johnson & Johnson is starting a huge study to test if a single-dose COVID-19 vaccine can protect people against the coronavirus. The study, launching Wednesday, will be one of the world’s largest coronavirus vaccine studies so far, involving 60,000 volunteers in the U.S., South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru.

A handful of other vaccines in the U.S. — including shots made by Moderna and Pfizer — as well as drug developers in other countries are already in final-stage testing. Hopes are high that answers about at least one candidate being tested in the U.S. could come by year’s end, maybe sooner.

5. Nelson Semedo: Wolves sign defender from Barcelona in a deal that could be worth £37m

Wolves have signed Portuguese right-back Nelson Semedo from Barcelona in a deal that could be worth £37m. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo had been seeking a replacement for Matt Doherty, who moved to Premier League rivals Tottenham last month.

“It isn’t often that we have the opportunity to sign a world-class player from a world-class club,” said Wolves executive chairman Jeff Shi.

Semedo, 26, has played 124 times for Barca and won 13 Portugal caps. Barcelona said the deal is an initial 30m euros (£27.61m) plus 10m euros “in variables.” Semedo, who has signed a contract until 2023, is the third permanent signing by Wolves during this transfer window, following the arrival of Fabio Silva from Porto and Ki-Jana Hoever from Liverpool.
