The Paley Center for Media announced on Wednesday, July 17, that filmmaking and media powerhouse Tyler Perry will be honored at its prestigious fall Gala, The Paley Honors. This star-studded event will celebrate Perry’s remarkable career on December 4, at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Perry’s influence on the entertainment industry is undeniable. The Paley Center recognizes him as “one of media’s greatest and most impactful figures,” according to Maureen J. Reidy, the organization’s President and CEO. Perry’s dedication to creating content that reflects diverse voices and experiences has earned him widespread acclaim.

The Paley Honors is known for attracting A-list celebrities. This year’s event is expected to be no different, with notable figures like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle joining the Tribute Host Committee.

2. Rema’s “HEIS” sets record for biggest opening week on Spotify Nigeria in 2024

Nigerian Afrobeats star Rema continues to break records with his sophomore album “HEIS,” which has become the most-streamed project on Spotify Nigeria in its opening week of 2024. Released on July 11, “HEIS” amassed a staggering 12.3 million streams, surpassing the previous record set by Olamide’s “Ikigai” (7.92 million streams). While it falls short of Davido’s all-time record of 14.4 million streams with “Timeless,” Rema’s achievement solidifies his place as a global force in Afrobeats.

Rema’s dominance extends beyond opening-day numbers. “HEIS” also holds the title for the second-highest second-day streams with a remarkable 1.99 million listens. With “HEIS,” Rema continues to experiment and push boundaries, showcasing his artistic growth.

3. South Africa: Kairo Forbes follows in her late dad AKA’s footsteps as she wins her first Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award

South Africa’s very own “kidfluencer” sensation, Kairo Forbes is making waves. The eight-year-old daughter of DJ Zinhle and the late rapper AKA has secured her first Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award, winning the coveted title of “Favorite African Kidfluencer.”

This victory holds special significance as it mirrors the achievement of her father, Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, who won a Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award back in 2019. Kairo’s win feels like a touching tribute, with her receiving the award at a watch party held in Johannesburg after the main ceremony on the other side of the globe. South Africa had a strong showing at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, with Kairo facing off against other talented youngsters like Biko’s Manna and last year’s winner, Lethukuthula Bhengu.

4. Serena Williams wins Legend Award at Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards

Tennis champion Serena Williams added another trophy to her already overflowing case, but this one wasn’t earned on the court. Nickelodeon’s 37th annual Kids’ Choice Awards honored the tennis icon with the prestigious Legend Award, recognizing her legendary career and lasting influence beyond the sport. The award was presented to her by actress and singer Kelly Rowland.

While most KCA awards are voted on by fans, the Legend Award is a special recognition bestowed upon “an aspirational, game-changing global superstar whose name is synonymous with greatness,” according to a statement from Nickelodeon. With 23 Grand Slam singles titles under her belt, there’s no doubt Williams fits the bill.

5. Luka Modric signs one-year extension with Real Madrid

Luka Modric, the midfield maestro and captain of Real Madrid, has put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension, keeping him at the Santiago Bernabeu until June 2025. The news, announced by the club on Wednesday, secures the future of a player considered a legend at Real Madrid and beyond.

The 38-year-old Croatian joined Los Blancos in 2012 and has since become a cornerstone of their success. He boasts an impressive trophy haul, including a record-breaking six Champions League titles, four La Liga championships, and a total of 26 trophies with the club. While Modric may have transitioned to a more reserved role in recent seasons, his contribution remains invaluable.
