Affordable luxury womenswear brand, Style Temple has released its Pre-Spring 2018 ready-to-wear collection which is set to debut at the Lagos Fashion and Design Week in October. The brand which is known for setting the benchmark pretty high for beautiful clothes, intended for women of different backgrounds, bodies and personalities went all out with this collection.
Ogugua Okonkwo, the creative director of the contemporary clothing brand took a fresh aesthetic approach as she chose to infer a delicate femininity, personal beauty and radicalism to her pieces. To reflect this, she embarks on a journey to explore what femininity really means to her and other women. She wanted to imagine the way women would dress if patriarchy or double standards didn’t exist.
The collection raises questions about societal notions around femininity and beauty. The collection is seen as a rebellion against the typical sartorial order in a conservative country like Nigeria where beauty and clothing pieces are expected to conform to a particular order as opposed to her designs which are far from the ordinary.
A delicate sense of femininity was shown with the use of soft pastel hues while sheer fabric and decolletages were used as an expression of rebellion. The collection shows a lot of construction and deconstruction in the pieces to express the theme of radicalism while featuring a strong contrast with a sense of rigidity and androgynous shapes, especially with the trousers.
