Our Favourite Looks As Seen On Men Across Africa

A fashion and pop culture writer who watches a lot…
The men in the African fashion and entertainment industries have their calendars heavy on engagements ranging from award shows and movie premieres to concerts and business meetings and they show up well dressed. Just because most of the events they attend don’t require a well-crafted swish hat, unless you are so inclined, each calls for a unique approach to style.
You would be forgiven for believing that being a well-dressed man is a preordained attribute: like being intelligent, having a nose for fragrance or possessing a superlative palate. Should not an awareness and appreciation of style be carved onto our character well before we are born? We wish!
The reality, however, is that style is learned and, in fact, entirely subjective. It’s a fact we learned well the hard way in the process of choosing our weekly best-dressed men in Africa’s most sought after industries.
For some celebrities, the ability to wear clothes that fit, in muted shades of navy and grey or the ability to perfectly work colours together to create an appealing ensemble is the ultimate definition of style. For others, a palpable sense of bravery and boldness combined with an ability to team outlandish hues with garish patterns is the epitome of being well dressed.
As usual, we witnessed both extremes last week. There were those who accessorised appropriately and knew what designer brand to wear with what another designer brand — Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and Fally Ipupa — were natural frontrunners in this list. Then there were those with more outlandish tastes — the obvious winners being designers Adebayo Oke-Lawal and Rich Mnisi.
But what is clear from last week’s list is that African men are dressing more brightly and brilliantly than ever before. From the effortless tailored looks pulled off perfectly by BBNaija Pepperdem’s Ike Onyema to the African prince-inspired brilliance of fashion influencer Akin Faminu, we are living in an age when men are spending more than they ever have on clothes and it shows.
