In January of 2009, Nadya Denise Doud-Suleman made global news and earned the name ‘Octomom’ as she was delivered of eight healthy children. The American mom went on to surpass the previous record holders; Nigerian-born American citizens, the Chukwus, who have seven out of their eight kids survive infancy.
The Chukwu octuplets were the fifth set of live-born octuplets in recorded history and the first to have seven of eight children survive infancy. With her 8 kids now aged 11, Nadya maintains her title for having the highest worldwide survival rate for a complete set of octuplets.
“My children were not a mistake – they were meant to be here.”

According to Nadya, “my children were not a mistake – they were meant to be here.” Nadya, who had six other children before the birth of the octuplets, began in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments in 1997 when she was 21 years old. She had her IVF treatments under the supervision of Dr. Michael Kamrava, who was in October 2009 expelled from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. In 2001 she gave birth to her first child, a son, while a daughter followed in 2002. Nadya continued IVF treatments which resulted in three more pregnancies—including one set of fraternal twins—for a total of six children (four sons, two daughters).
In 2009 when she gave birth to eight beautiful babies, her pregnancy and delivery made headlines around the world because people were surprised by the fact that one woman could carry so many children at once.
At the time of their birth, the Octomom was not sure how she would take care of her now large family, but today, the kids are all doing well now. The Octuplets who are in their fifth grade of school for the 2019/2020 academic session are also active in school activities. Six of the octuplets — Makai, Nariyah, Maliyah, Josiah, Jonah, and Jeremiah — sing in their school’s choir while Isaiah and Noah play instruments.
