“Original, powerful and unforgettable.” These are the words that have been used to describe one of the world’s most renowned supermodel, Naomi Campbell by the Sunday Times. At the age of 15, Naomi Campbell made her groundbreaking entrance into the world of modeling and has been fighting to change the fashion world since then.
For this interview which precedes Naomi turning 50 on May 22, the British supermodel who is estimated to be worth about £30m today, reveals that the one product she has always sworn by is “Dettol!”
According to her, “I grew up with Dettol. Dettol is part of my life!” We got to see her love for the brand when she showed us how she wipes down her seat while traveling in the pre-coronavirus era. One thing is for sure, Naomi Campbell has often been ahead of the curve irrespective of whether she is championing diversity in the fashion industry by supporting new talent such as Adut Akech or promoting the potentials of Africa.
Here are 5 major things she revealed…
#1. Her most influential photographers

When asked which photographers have been most influential in her career, she singles out Steven Meisel, who first shot her when she was 16. “I didn’t know how to pose, so I learnt a lot from him. I learnt from most of the photographers because I came from classical dance, so I had no idea what was going on. I was just like, ‘I’ll use that and try to incorporate it and see if that works, see if I get away with it!'”
She also lists Peter Lindbergh, Herb Ritts, David Bailey, Terence Donovan, and most importantly Martin Brading, who was the first to ever shoot her for Elle in April 1986 in New Orleans.
“Do all that you wanna do. If you know you have the energy and strength to do it, go ahead and do it. Go for your passions, go for your desires…”

#2. Her lockdown fashion
Naomi also revealed that during this lockdown, she still gets dressed properly every day, even if she’s working from home. “I’m not lounging around in my pyjamas, no. It doesn’t give me good self-esteem.”
#3. Note to her younger self

Naomi had this to say to her younger self: “Do all that you wanna do. If you know you have the energy and strength to do it, go ahead and do it. Go for your passions, go for your desires. And don’t listen to what anyone says. Only you know what you can do or how far you can go.”
#4. Turning 50 – Birthday plans
As for that landmark birthday, she promises she hasn’t been thinking about it. According to her, “there were so many different ideas before COVID-19 kicked off. Frankly, if I am here on May 22, in isolation, I’m blessed. I wanna get everything out of what we’re supposed to get out of this. I’m no saint, or whatever, but I wanna be still enough to catch this wave.”
#5. On retirement

Despite having spent 30 years in the industry, Naomi is still very much active. She told The Sunday Times’ Style magazine: “I don’t like the word ‘retire’. If I don’t wanna do it anymore, I just won’t do it. But I’m never gonna say that. I’m someone who’s extremely active. I like to be active and I think I’m always going to be active.”
