The pandemic notwithstanding, the year 2020 has been quite an interesting one for music lovers thanks to the impact made by the likes of Wizkid, Davido, Rema, Tiwa Savage and many more Afrobeat artists. As the year comes to an end, Google has released its list of the top 10 most searched songs of 2020 by Nigerians––and we have to agree, everyone of them was definitely a hit!
The industry witnessed very interesting events that made headlines from January till date. Some of our favourite artists were embroiled in controversies—Naira Marley disobeying lockdown protocols, others released groundbreaking singles, while some took Afrobeats higher with albums that charted internationally. But how much did fans enjoy their hit songs? Now we get to find out whose songs was/were the most searched for on Google in 2020.
30 Billion Gang pioneer, Davido tops the list this year and also has the highest number of most searched songs on the list. ‘Fem’—which topped music charts across Nigeria for several weeks—snagged the number one spot this year. ‘Betty Butter’, the Mayorkun song on which Davido featured came in at number four, while ‘Holy Ground’ featuring American rapper, Nicki Minaj came in at number 10. But Holy Ground isn’t new to the accolades as it was recognized as the highest charting Nigerian song on the Billboard digital chart and Global chart a few weeks back.
Mavin music group prodigy, Rema had the second highest number of songs on the list with ‘Ginger me’ coming in at the fifth position and ‘Woman’ coming in sixth. Rema also made history as the youngest artist in Nigerian history to make the list.
Surprisingly, singer/songwriter, Simi is the only woman who made the most searched songs by Nigerians in 2020 list with ‘Duduke’ sitting comfortably at the number two spot. Other artists who made the list include Burna Boy, Naira Marley, Patoranking and more.
