The 62nd edition of the Miss South Africa pageant, hosted by South African actress, TV personality, and human rights activist Nomzamo Mbatha held today, Saturday, October 24, at the Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town. The Miss South Africa 2020 ceremony, which was a closed one came with the crowning of a new queen, Miss Shudufhadzo Musida.
The queen was crowned with the Ubuhle Bethungo Lenkosazana, which means “Beauty of the Rainbow” in the Zulu language. The crown is said to represent the diversity of South Africa and is embellished with thousands of zirconia stones.
For 24-year-old Shudufhadzo Musida, who has a Bachelor of Social Sciences in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from the University of Pretoria––and is now pursuing a BA Honours in International Relations at the University of Witwatersrand, this win gives her an opportunity to make a difference.
The crowned Miss South Africa 2020 is one who is passionate about mental health awareness and the economic and educational empowerment of women and children, especially in disadvantaged communities. As such, destigmatizing mental health will be at the forefront of her social initiatives as it provides a healthy foundation for issues such as economic and educational empowerment to be tackled successfully.
She believes that “it is more important now more than ever because of COVID-19 to check in on mental health, especially in the education sector with children having to adapt to so many changes in their daily lives, and more so in disadvantaged communities where poverty has been exacerbated.”
Just like her mentor, Miss South Africa 2019 and current Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi, Shudufhadzo Musida is expected to represent South Africa at the Miss Universe 2020 pageant. We are definitely looking forward to seeing Shudufhadzo achieve greater things.
