#1. Michelle Obama closes out the DNC first night with an emotional speech

Democrats pushed a message of unity and competence on Monday in the first night of the Democratic National Convention. Michelle Obama closed out the night at the DNC with an emotional plea to vote for Joe Biden: “If we have any hope of ending this chaos, we have got to vote for Joe Biden like our lives depend on it,” she said.

Michelle Obama, who wore a necklace that spelled out “V-O-T-E” to the DNC, gave an emotional plea for a return to empathy.

“Right now, kids in this country are seeing what happens when we stop requiring empathy of one another,” Michelle said. “They’re looking around wondering if we’ve been lying to them this whole time about who we are and what we truly value.”

Dr Edward Nasigre Mahama, the five-time presidential candidate of the People’s National Convention (PNC), will not be contesting this year’s presidential election.

“I am stepping aside as the presidential candidate of the PNC. I will not contest either the party’s presidential primary or the national elections,” he told the media yesterday.

Dr Mahama, who is the leader of the PNC and currently Ambassador at large appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was sharing some insights on what the PNC was doing in preparation towards the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections. Michelle Obama speech.

#3. South Africa: Alcohol back on sale — Long queues form outside of liquor stores

It’s a day that South Africans have waited more than six weeks for. Alcohol is back on the shelves for Level 2 of lockdown, and as we’ve already seen on Tuesday morning, some people are keen to make up for the lost time.

Queues have been reported outside of liquor stores in Polokwane, Randfontein, Johannesburg, and the Eastern Cape this morning. It’s alleged one group camped out at a store on Oxford Street since 4:00. However, the general pattern of play has seen eager shoppers turn up at the outlets from 8:00 onwards. Liquor stores are allowed to open from 9:00 – 17:00, throughout Monday to Thursday.

#4. Trump to pardon Susan B. Anthony on the 100-year anniversary of 19th Amendment

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he is posthumously pardoning Susan B. Anthony, a leader of the women’s suffrage movement who was arrested for illegally voting in 1872. Trump announced the full pardon for Anthony during the signing of a proclamation commemorating the 100th anniversary (since August 18 1920) of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which guaranteed women the right to vote.

“She was never pardoned. Did you know that?” the president said during remarks at the event. “What took so long?” Michelle Obama speech.

Anthony was arrested after voting in the 1872 presidential election in her hometown of Rochester, New York, and charged with “knowingly, wrongfully and unlawfully” voting. She was convicted by an all-male jury and ordered to pay a $100 fine.

#5. John Mikel Obi: Stoke City sign former Chelsea midfielder

Stoke City have signed former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi. The former Nigeria captain, 33, was a free agent having left Turkish side Trabzonspor by mutual consent in March.

Stoke boss Michael O’Neill said: “I was really impressed with him when we met for the first time and he outlined what he wants from the next phase of his career. We spent four hours talking and he made it clear he wants to get back into the Premier League and finish his career there and hopefully, he can do that with Stoke City.”
