1. Metro Boomin launches initiative with Steve and Marjorie Harvey

Metro Boomin is using his platform and resources to help celebrate single mothers with a new initiative. Introduced during the Atlanta Falcons game on Sunday, December 4, the mega producer’s “Single Moms Are Superheroes” is a partnership with the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation, and treated 26 mothers and their children to a VIP game experience at Atlanta’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In addition to covering the families’ travel expenses nationwide and providing tickets to the game, Metro also arranged for his guests to access Mercedes-Benz Stadium through the players’ tunnel ahead of the game’s kickoff.

The moms and their children also got a chance to be on the field with both teams for the national anthem. The goal is to spotlight and celebrate single mothers, extending the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation’s work to provide them with resources and support. “Single Moms Are Superheroes” is an important initiative to Metro Boomin, who tragically lost his mother, Leslie Wayne, earlier this year after her husband allegedly shot and killed her and himself.

2. Wizkid’s ‘Made In Lagos’ ranks second on Billboard end-of-the-year albums chart

“Made In Lagos” by Afrobeat megastar Wizkid has ranked as the second song on Billboard’s 2022 world albums chart, while Burna Boy’s “Love, Damini” also ranks in the top 10. Billboard has released the 2022 year-end list, with “Made In Lagos” ranking second on the list behind BTS’s “Proof.” Boosted by the hit single “Essence” feat. Tems and Justin Bieber, “Made In Lagos” is the first album to spend 100 weeks on the World Album Chart, and it holds the record for the longest charting album after breaking Fela’s “The Black President” 45-week record.

Also in the top 10 is Burna Boy’s 2022 album “Love, Damini” which ranks 9th on the list despite being released in July. CKay’s 2019 EP “CKay The First” which houses his global hit single “Love Nwantiti” finished at number 14 on the year-end chart.

Over the weekend, Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa (Scorpion Kings) held a sold-out show in collaboration with Piano People at London’s 5,000-capacity Printworks venue. The event was sold out a week before the show. During the show, global afrobeat star WizKid, a known fan of Amapiano, showed up to support the duo. In videos shared online, the “Essence” hitmaker is seen standing and vibing with the Scorpion Kings behind the DJ booth. “Guess who came to our sold out Scorpion Kings show … @wizkidayo! Last night was a movie!”

At one point during the show, Wizkid embraces the duo as they play the 2019 hit single, “Sponono,”  which Wizkid was featured on alongside fellow afrobeats star Burna Boy and South African rapper Cassper Nyovest. The Scorpion Kings are set to embark on their nationwide summer tour, Scorpion Kings Live, beginning with a stop at Cape Town’s Grand Arena, GrandWest, on December 11.

4. NAACP Announce date for 54TH NAACP Image Awards

On Tuesday, the NAACP and BET announced that the 54th NAACP Image Awards will be broadcast live on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 8:00 p.m. (live ET/PT on delay) on BET from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California. The show will be in front of an audience for the first time in three years. Nominees will be announced, and online international voting opens on Thursday, January 12, 2023. Voting closes on Friday, February 10. Leading up to the Image Awards, the NAACP will be hosting a range of week-long activities in Los Angeles to further celebrate and honor outstanding people of color in film, television, music, and literature.

Globally recognized as one of the most distinguished multicultural awards shows for people of color, the 54th NAACP Image Awards will continue a tradition of excellence, uplifting values that inspire equality, justice, and progressive change, and highlighting artists committed to that purpose.

5. Gabriel Jesus undergoes knee surgery in serious injury blow to Arsenal

Arsenal confirmed on Tuesday that Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus will undergo knee surgery. An MRI conducted by Brazil’s World Cup medical staff confirmed that Jesus would miss the rest of the tournament, and now his season at Arsenal is also set to be limited after his surgery. Arsenal was brief in their official statement, writing: “Everyone at the club is supporting Gabby and will be working hard to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.”

With the January transfer window about to open and Arsenal pushing for a Premier League title, the club could consider dipping into the market to reinforce their attack. Their willingness to spend may depend on the extent of Jesus’ injury, however, and it’s worth noting that they were quiet in last campaign’s mid-season window despite questions about their depth.
