We covered earlier how shocked we were when Jeremy Scott rolled out his BW collection at NYFW. We were expecting a lot of colour from the one man who seems to deliver splashes with a carefree yet precise calculation. Since Jeremy Scott didn’t deliver, it was easy to fall back and watch as this season’s spirit grew even gloomier. Don’t get us wrong, we were getting used to the drab browns and greys but seeing the Victoria Beckham models walk down the runway in shades of cream, red and tan with sprinkles of animal print shoes immediately lifted our spirit.
With this Fall-Winter 2019/2020 collection, Victoria Beckham as a brand didn’t stray far from its usual narrative of “telling the story of modern femininity.”
The show was held inside the relaxed Tate Britain. It was streamed live and thus the opportunity to announce the launch of Victoria Beckham YouTube channel was presented. With Anna Wintour in the front row alongside beauty and fashion director Derek Blasberg and of course, the Beckhams, we could say the punchy colours, design elegance and undeniable quality of the collection were enough to keep guests drawn in and entertained.
According to Victoria:
“Our woman tells a story through each of the looks. She’s proper but she’s definitely not prim. You can feel a sense of her life through the clothes that she wears.”
In itself, the ready to wear collection’s direction was all about revamping style ideas from the past; there were hints of styles from as far back as the ’40s. Stylish cuts like pencil skirts, sweaters and flares from the ’70s weren’t lost in translation as these silhouettes prevailed.
Some fashion writers have drawn similarities between the collection and the Saint Laurent 1970s designs but it’s not even close. The colours here are bright, cheerful and the styles put you in a good mood. It truly was made for the modern woman by a modern woman and you could even say that this is the most fleshed out collection that translates Victoria Beckham’s modus operandi.
Here are select pieces from the collection we found to be simplistically fabulous…
