It has been 14 years since Kechi Okwuchi became one of two unlikely survivors of the Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145 plane crash. The sad event happened on December 10, 2005, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria and claimed 108 lives. 60 of the deceased were Kechi’s school mates from Loyola Jesuit College.
The 30-year-old now singer and motivational speaker ultimately suffered third-degree burns on over 65% of her body and was given a 30% chance of survival. She beat the odds and continues to thrive after over a hundred reconstructive surgeries.
Kechi Okwuchi, who currently resides in Texas has become a symbol of hope for survivors of major tragedies across the world. She has since completed a bachelor’s degree which she graduated from with honors and is now sharing her gifts with the world.
In 2015, Kechi was invited to speak at TEDxEuston where she gave a talk titled Girls, Know Thyself. Even bigger fame came calling in 2017 when she auditioned and became a contestant on the twelfth season of America’s Got Talent. She immediately became an audience favourite, finishing the competition as a finalist. Kechi was later invited to participate in ‘America’s Got Talent: The Champions’ in 2019.
Since her AGT debut, she’s been invited to perform at many top events throughout the United States and a few overseas. In November 2019, Kechi was chosen to headline Utah’s 8th Annual Women of Worth gala. It was during this same time that our attention was drawn to her elevated interest in fashion. Let’s just say, she’s been turning up the heat with her recent style takes.
From pleated skirts to fancy berets and plaid suits, Kechi is right on trend and doing it all with so much confidence and class. While we can’t say whether modelling is in her immediate future, we can definitely say that she’s got all it takes to stun in any lookbook. Another thing we know for sure is that Kechi is truly an inspiration to all of us. Her tenacity and zest for life is simply infectious and we can’t wait to see how she continues to blossom through her passions.
