Happy Birthday, Julia Roberts! Julia Fiona Roberts is an Academy Award-winning American actress, producer, and one of Hollywood’s top stars who turns 53 today, October 28.
Even though she made her acting debut in 1987 in the movie Firehouse and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her supporting role in the comedy-drama Steel Magnolias, it wasn’t until she starred alongside Richard Gere in Pretty Woman that she became a household name all over the world.
Since then, Julia Roberts has continued to star in roles that redefined the rom-com genre. From The Pelican Brief, an adaptation of the John Grisham novel of the same name in 1993 to My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997), Notting Hill (1999), and Runaway Bride (1999), Julia proved that she was made for the screens.
In 2000, Julia became the first actress to earn $20 million, playing the eponymous environmental activist in the Steven Soderbergh-directed biographical film Erin Brockovich. Her performance garnered her the Academy Award for Best Actress, the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress (Drama).
For Julia Roberts, life is not only about acting and running the production company Red Om Films with her sisters. She has given her time and resources to UNICEF as well as to other charitable organizations. In 2006, she became a spokeswoman for Earth Biofuels and chair of the company’s newly formed Advisory Board promoting the use of renewable fuels.
She supported Gucci’s “Chime For Change” campaign that aims to spread female empowerment. She was also the voice of Mother Nature in a 2014 short film for Conservation International, intended to raise awareness about climate change.
