1. Jonathan Majors gets August trial date

Following a brief hearing in a Manhattan courtroom Tuesday morning, June 20, actor Jonathan Majors learned that his trial date for his misdemeanor assault case involving his now ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari has been set for August 3. According to reports, the 33-year-old hid behind a pair of sunglasses toward the back of the courtroom with his rumored new girlfriend, “Harlem” star Megan Good. The actor barely spoke as he listened to the judge’s instructions, including adhering to the full temporary order of protection, which requires him to stay away from the victim. Legal representation for Majors has denied any wrong since news of the March incident was made public, calling the case a “witch hunt” against the actor “driven by baseless claims.”

In a letter obtained by Insider, the “Lovecraft Country” star’s lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, accused prosecutors of having racial bias, claiming that her client’s arrest was “racist.” “Even though Ms. Jabbari admitted to drinking to the point of throwing up, taking sleeping pills, and having no idea how she woke up in a closet with a cut on her head and injured finger, the police jumped to the conclusion that Mr. Majors (the young, tall, strong, rich Black man) must have ‘done this’ to Ms. Jabbari,” Chaudhry’s letter alleged, citing the NYPD footage. Majors stands accused of assaulting Jabbari on March 25 during a fight in Chinatown.

2. Bill Gates says he discovered Burna Boy, Rema through his daughter

While addressing a gathering of Civil Society organizations and the media during a recent visit, billionaire Bill Gates shared a short anecdote about his daughter, who said he was lucky to be visiting Nigeria since he would get to see Burna Boy and Rema. The philanthropist went on to say that he couldn’t share in his daughter’s enthusiasm as he didn’t know either of them. He did, however, recall seeing Davido and Wizkid perform during one of his visits to Nigeria. Gates’ statement has since caused a stir on social media as the billionaire has inadvertently echoed the words of Davido who recently referred to Burna Boy as a “New Cat” during an interview with a French media platform.

Davido’s statement was made to highlight the crop of new artistes taking Afrobeats to a global audience following the monumental and pacesetting efforts made by him and Wizkid. The statement polarized Nigerians on Twitter as they disagreed with the accuracy of the classification with some agreeing with Davido while others maintained that Burna Boy can’t be classified as a new cat as he released his first mainstream hit “Like To Party” in 2013.

3. Cassper Nyovest speaks on new album ‘Solomon’

Cassper Nyovest has been in the music industry for more than a decade and says his next album is a celebration of that. Taking to his Twitter timeline, he shared the name of his much-anticipated music project. “My next album #Solomon drops on July 28 and it’s a celebration of longevity,” he wrote. In his mentions, his followers expressed their excitement.

While dropping hints earlier this year, Nyovest promised this would be a “fire album.” He stated that he understood he would not always be regarded as the “coolest,” yet he still wanted to have influence and continue making money. Recall that back in January, Cassper said he did not feel the need to prove himself anymore, and fans are speculating that this album would reveal that.

4. Missy Elliott opens up about her mental health battles

On Tuesday, June 20, Missy Elliott appeared in the July/August issue of ESSENCE as their latest cover story. Within the feature, the legendary artiste spoke on her career, helping others in need, and creating some of the most groundbreaking music videos in the game. She also opened up about dealing with Graves’ disease and battling mental health issues. “I think that a lot of things were brushed up under the rug for me growing up, and probably also for a lot of people,” the Virginia native said. “I had so much time to just think of childhood stuff and all kinds of stuff… But that’s what makes me human.”

She continued, “Now, I’m fine with being like, ‘Hey, I got anxiety’ or ‘I went through depression.’ Even the biggest artist, or just the regular everyday working person, we all go through s**t. We all do. And it’s okay to say, ‘Hey, I’m not okay today.’ Probably, we would keep a lot of people around if we were that open, because we would be able to uplift each other. We’d know that I’m not going to look at you crazy if you say, ‘Hey, I’m having a rough day.’ Maybe you’re thinking things that you shouldn’t think, or whatever the case may be.” Elliott also revealed that there was an unnamed close friend who played a big part in her recovery.

5. Arsenal to sign Kai Havertz for £65m as Chelsea agree to sale of German forward

Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Kai Havertz from Chelsea for £65 million. According to reports, a medical is now set to be arranged for the German forward ahead of his official unveiling at the Emirates Stadium. The two clubs are now putting the final touches on “potential installments and add-ons,” with Havertz having already agreed to personal terms with the Gunners after turning down a possible contract extension at Chelsea.

Havertz has scored 32 goals in 139 games for Chelsea since joining the club from Bayer Leverkusen for £72m in 2020. Only nine of those efforts were recorded in 2022-23 as the attacker endured a dismal campaign, with Chelsea failing to win a single piece of silverware while dropping into the Premier League’s bottom half.
