4. Convicted ex-president returns to Burkina Faso

The former President of Burkina Faso, Blaise Compaoré, has arrived back in his country after spending seven years in exile. The government says he is there to hold talks with the military junta as part of reconciliation efforts. One journalist has been tweeting pictures of the return. In April, Compaoré was given a life sentence in absentia for his role in the assassination of the country’s revolutionary leader, Thomas Sankara, during the coup that brought him to power 35 years ago.

5. Gomez signs new Liverpool deal with Jota and Keita set to follow

Joe Gomez has signed a new long-term contract at Liverpool, with Diogo Jota and Naby Keita also in line for new deals. Gomez, 25, followed in the footsteps of Mohamed Salah by committing his future to the Reds and has now set his sights on forcing his way back into Jurgen Klopp’s team at center-back. The England international made just 11 starts last season, and only 21 appearances in total, but has been assured he remains very much a part of Klopp’s plans and has now extended his seven-year stay on Merseyside.

Gomez’s previous deal had two years left to run, leading to suggestions he could be tempted away from Anfield this summer. Aston Villa and Newcastle were among those linked, but reports say that it was unlikely that a transfer would take place and that the player was determined to fight for his spot at Liverpool. Gomez has now silenced speculation over his future once and for all by signing a new five-year contract that will keep him at Anfield until 2027.
