Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton isn’t just known for his lightning-fast reflexes behind the wheel. He’s also a style icon with a penchant for bold, innovative timepieces. So, it came as no surprise when he sported a revolutionary new watch at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix: the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 concept, featuring the world’s first fully luminous ceramic case.
This isn’t your average glow-in-the-dark watch face. IWC, a brand synonymous with luxury and technical prowess, has unveiled Ceralume, a proprietary luminous ceramic material that imbues the entire watch, from the case to the dial and strap, with an ethereal blue glow that lasts over 24 hours.

The technical hurdles were substantial. Maintaining a homogenous blend of raw materials with varying particle sizes proved tricky. IWC’s engineers tackled this by employing a specialized ball milling method to achieve uniform consistency. Additionally, sintering and grinding the luminous ceramic required precise adjustments to ensure the material retained its structural integrity and luminescent properties.
The first glimpse of the Ceralume concept came during the Monaco Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton, a longtime IWC brand ambassador, donned the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 featuring the luminous ceramic case. The watch’s bold blue glow undoubtedly complemented the high-octane atmosphere of the race.
