“Too atrophied for pen or tongue” is a line from famed Nigerian poet John P. Clark’s Agbor Dancer as he tried to explain how mesmerized he was by the dancer’s enthralling movements. For sure, it is this state we found ourselves in last week as Black women raptured us into their presence with irresistible beauty looks that were an unmatched blend of creative, fun, authentic, and of course, sexy. How do we begin to describe the looks? In writing or in speech, neither would do justice.
The Looks
Makeup
American actress Brandee Evans closed the week out in a sultry look that put the focus on her eyes. Heavy black liner perfectly glided across her top and lower lids beckoning us to fall in love. Of course, we did. Dust of metallic gold shadow served as the backdrop for the pitch-black liner and her witchy lashes further added to the depth of her eyes. The face beat was finished off nicely with nude lipstick.
The colorful eyeliner trend is in full swing this summer and a slew of our favorite celebrities and beauty influencers have been rocking it with much gusto. Last week, South African actress Amanda du-Pont and Nigerian influencer Diana Eneje made a show of the trend to great success. Both ladies turned to the trusted blue liner to grace their top lids while embodying their individuality. Du Pont made a case for a simple stroke across each lid while Eneje added some drama with embellishments.
Hair
In 2001, when Alicia Keys first arrested us with her hit song Fallin‘, she did so with her incredible vocals and iconic zig-zag hairstyle. For the many of us who followed in her steps and rocked the hairstyle, last week brought back sweet nostalgia as Keys debuted her famous hairstyle, again. This updated version flaunts thick, braided ends held in place using gold-tone ties. Her well-laid edges was the trendy finish the iconic hairdo needed.
