1. Ice Spice has the most Top 5 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2023

As reported by ChartData, Ice Spice currently holds the distinction of having the most Top 5 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 this year. The highest of that is “Karma,” her collaboration with Taylor Swift that sits at No. 2 on the aforementioned chart. Two other drops — “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2” with PinkPantheress and “Princess Diana” with Nicki Minaj — have peaked at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

Following a series of loose drops, Ice Spice broke through the mold with 2022’s “Munch (Feelin’ U),” a drill-influenced number that was produced by go-to beatsmith RIOTUSA and has since earned a gold certification. Back in January, she liberated her debut EP, “Like..?,” a six-song offering with a single assist from Lil Tjay on “Gangsta Boo.” Ice Spice is proving to be part of music’s upper echelon at the halfway point of 2023.

2. Rema, Davido make Spotify’s 2023 ‘Songs of Summer’ predictions

The duo of Nigerian singers, Divine Ikubor, aka Rema, and David Adeleke, aka Davido, have debuted songs on Spotify’s 2023 “Songs of Summer” predictions. Rema’s hit song with American superstar, Selena Gomez “Calm Down” and “Unavailable” from Davido’s latest album “Timeless” were the only African songs predicted by Spotify to blow up charts this summer.

“To help visualize what’s hot worldwide, we’ve created a map that highlights the most popular tunes in more than 100 countries across the Northern Hemisphere,” Spotify said about the predictions in a statement on the streaming platform’s website on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Davido has expressed his excitement about the prediction as he retweeted it with a lovely smile emoji.

3. South Africa: Carol Ofori stars in Disney animation series ‘Kizazi Moto’

Radio presenter and author Carol Ofori has been named as a character on the Disney+ SA animation series “Kizazi Moto Generation Fire.” In a statement shared, it was explained she stars in an episode titled “Mkhuzi: The Spirit Racer” and plays the role of the titular character Mkhuzi. In this episode, we meet Manzo — a half-human, half-alien teenager played by Nasty C who dreams of becoming a superstar racer like his mother, the legendary masked racer Mkhuzi.

“I am excited to be a part of this Disney production. That talent from the whole African continent is involved makes me proud,” Carol said. “I’ve always wanted to create content for Africans, African children, and for the world to consume our content as Africans, so I am happy to contribute more in this amazing animation series — and I hope it’s the first of many exciting projects from Disney that shines a light on Africa and its talent.”

4. Nicki Minaj sued for damaging borrowed jewelry

Famous Trinidadian-American rapper, Nicki Minaj has reportedly been sued by a jewelry store for not paying for loaned custom jewelry pieces which they claim she damaged. The rapper was taken to court by a luxury West Hollywood jewelry boutique, Roseark, according to reports. Nicki’s stylist, Brett Alan Nelson, was said to have signed a contract with Roseark store to borrow pieces of jewelry for a public appearance. The contract was said to have required the stylist to return the items within a week and pay for any damages the jewelry might incur under his watch. Upon return, Roseark alleged that some of the pieces, a set of earrings and a leaf ring, were damaged. And the invoices for the incurred damages have been forwarded to the stylist

The damages said to have cost a total sum of $26,239.50 including interest are yet to be paid, hence the need for the lawsuit. Roseark in the lawsuit also claimed Brett failed to return 66 pieces of jewelry at the agreed time. But a source close to Nicki denied the allegations, adding that everything was returned on time.

5. Inter Miami confirm stunning deal for Lionel Messi after Argentine superstar confirmed decision to head to MLS

Inter Miami have confirmed the signing of Lionel Messi in a transfer that has stunned world football. The MLS club have won the race to sign Messi as a free agent, ahead of his departure from Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract. They announced Messi’s arrival on social media with a 32-second video making reference to the interest from Barcelona and Al-Hilal – the clubs Miami have beaten to his signature – as well as people questioning whether a player of Messi’s stature would ever go to MLS. The club’s managing owner Jorge Mas also tweeted an image of a figure shrouded in shadows wearing an Inter Miami ‘Messi 10’ shirt.

Messi’s move is a seismic one for MLS with both he and long-time Ballon d’Or rival Cristiano Ronaldo now having left European football. Messi admitted he “wanted” to return to Barcelona but the club’s financial situation made the nostalgic reunion impossible. Messi confirmed his move, saying: “I made the decision that I am going to go to Miami. I still haven’t closed it 100 percent. I’m missing some things but we decided to continue the path.”
