How To Firm The Skin: 5 Techniques And Remedies That Work Magic

how-to-firm-the-skin

As we age, our skin loses its elasticity which gives rise to the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin. To slow down the formation of wrinkles and the natural structural failure of the facial muscles, it is important to firm the skin with targeted facial exercises and a dedicated beauty routine which often consists of the application of serums and creams.

Other than aging, several factors can also be responsible for the loss of elasticity and muscle tone on the face including sudden weight change and an unregulated lifestyle. These factors cause the skin to relax which in turn slows down cellular activities in the dermis and epidermis, hence, causing a reduction in the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, which are essential substances for maintaining a toned and elastic face. It is therefore necessary to intervene promptly to salvage the situation and avoid losing the suppleness of your face.

One place to start is facial exercises. Facial exercise is very important to firm up the face, which slows down the progressive structural failure and, at the same time, contributes to the production of elastin, collagen, and hyaluronic acid. However, this is not the only technique for firming and toning the face. You can also use a plumping firming face cream or take supplements to counteract skin aging effectively.

While these techniques and remedies for a toned face have proven effective, there are also things you should do to help the process. First of all, it is imperative to eliminate smoking and excessive alcohol intake which can accelerate aging. In addition, it’s necessary to follow a balanced and healthy diet. Furthermore, endeavor to sleep at least eight hours each night to promote natural cell regeneration. Finally, don’t overlook the power of water. By drinking plenty of water, you keep your skin hydrated and maintain its elasticity.

Here are 5 simple, yet effective techniques and remedies for firm skin:

  1. Use skin-firming creams
  2. Try supplements
  3. Practice some massages.
  4. Firm your face with natural methods.
  5. Perform facial exercises.

#1. Skin-firming creams

Although it’s not advisable to bank on firming creams, there’s no denying that they play a role when it comes to skin firming. Some creams indeed take time to provide results, but at the end of the day, you’re likely to see a difference in tightening up loose skin and even minimizing the appearance of cellulite. The key is to opt for products that contain anti-aging ingredients like retinoids and collagen. Also, create a consistent daytime and nighttime beauty routine for maximum results.

#2. Supplements

When it comes to firming the skin, which also affects the skin’s appearance, some supplements to look out for are:

  • Collagen peptides: Collagen is necessary for firm, youthful skin but as we age, the skin doesn’t produce as much of this protein. This leads many to get their collagen from other sources like skincare products and supplements. Supplements work to replenish the collagen that’s broken down in the body. You can take it in different forms, including a collagen drink. Use daily and consistently for best results.
  • Vitamin C: This powerful antioxidant repairs damaged skin cells, protect the skin from free radicals, and can even assist in collagen production.

#3. Facial massages to firm up

One of the most used methods to regain the elasticity and tone of the facial muscles is facial massage, which can be done with special tools or simply with your hands. These facial massage techniques are the same as those used for body massage, and it will only take you a few minutes each day to begin to see results with consistent use.

For an effective facial massage, it is necessary to perform circular movements with the palm on the entire surface of the face and tap the areas most prone to skin aging such as the eye and lip contour, under chin and forehead. The movements must be slow and constant, and to enhance the beneficial effects, you can also use a moisturizing cream or oil.

The gua sha method

Have you heard of the gua sha method? If you are still unfamiliar with the potency of this self-massage technique to firm the contours of the face, then you should know that gua sha is the preferred method of Gwyneth Paltrow, who recommends it to her millions of fans.

In this technique, a special instrument made of either jade or rose quartz is used. It works by simply massaging the face from the bottom upwards, exerting small pressure with fluid and regular movements. This gives a Botox effect without visiting a cosmetician. Crafty, isn’t it?

As an alternative to the innovative gua sha massage technique, you can tone and firm the facial muscles with a simple jade roller. This massage will help relax and revitalize your skin and also relieve muscle tension. The jade roller was widely used in traditional Chinese medicine, and many women of Asian descent attribute their healthy skin to this tool. For best results, keep it in the fridge for an added chilly effect on the face, and then let it slide gently onto the cheeks, forehead, and neck.

The ideal massage with the jade roller follows the lines of the face. To best optimize, it’s advisable to apply an anti-aging cream to increase the formation of collagen and elastin. In my opinion, this should be a staple in every beauty routine.

#4. Natural methods for firming the face

Another great method for elastic and firm skin is using natural remedies. This is a great option if you’re tight on a budget, or if you’ll rather use only nature in its rawest form on your skin. You can easily whip up nourishing and revitalizing masks from the comfort of your home that would work wonders on your skin.

Carrots and honey

Among the most popular natural remedies to firm up the contours of the face is the preparation of a facial mask using carrots and honey. For this, you need 1 carrot and 2 or 3 tablespoons of honey.

Honey and carrot are two ingredients rich in vitamins and mineral salts that are super excellent for effectively firming and toning the skin of your face. To prepare this firming mask, boil the carrot for a few minutes and then mash it with a fork. After which, add the honey and mix carefully. Apply it on your face and leave it on for 30 minutes or longer, if you so choose. Rinse and repeat the natural treatment at least twice a week.

Yogurt and aloe

You need 3 tablespoons of aloe vera gel and 7 tablespoons of natural plain yogurt for this mask. To prepare this mask which tightens and tones the muscles of your face, simply mix aloe vera with natural yogurt until you get a smooth and homogeneous consistency.

Apply evenly on your face, making sure to cover every inch, and leave for about 20 minutes. Next, rinse carefully and repeat the application at least once a day. The mix of aloe vera and yogurt is also excellent for moisturizing dry skin and can also relieve certain skin allergies. However, be careful not to overdo the amount of aloe vera gel in the mixture to avoid making the dermis too red.

Lemon and egg

With 1 egg and 3 drops of lemon juice, you can prepare a face-firming mask. If you have oily skin, this is a great option as it’s an astringent mask that can slow down sebum production. In a bowl, mix the egg white with the lemon drops until you have a solid enough mixture that you can easily apply to your face. Allow the mask to act on the face for 2-3 minutes and then rinse carefully. It can be applied at least two to three times a week for better results.

#5. Facial exercises

Moving your facial muscles can improve skin elasticity and tone, so if you want to improve your appearance and ward off skin aging, do some facial exercises at least once a day. Facial-firming exercises allow you to loosen muscle tension, promote elastin and collagen production, and give yourself a break from everyday stress.

Exercise for the forehead

One of the areas that relax and lose elasticity more easily is the forehead, this is why it’s not unusual to observe marked and unsightly expression lines. To tone the forehead, you can perform a simple exercise: place your hands on the sides of the forehead, at the temples, and with the little fingers of the hands, pull the skin towards the hairline, trying to stretch it completely, but without exerting too much pressure. Stay in this position for about 10 seconds and repeat the exercise at least 10 times.

Exercise for cheeks and cheekbones

The loss of elasticity on the cheeks and cheekbones is very common, but to prevent it, you can perform a simple exercise. Inflate your cheeks and hold your breath for at least 30 seconds, then release the air slowly. This way, you would have stretched the skin of the cheeks and cheekbones. You can also do the balloon exercise by inflating a single cheek and alternating the movement. Repeat at least 15 times.

Exercises for the eye area

The eye contour is one of the most sensitive areas of our face and must be trained with care and consistency to avoid premature aging. To improve the muscle tone of the eye contour, you can perform many exercises; the simplest of which is to arch the eyebrows as much as possible, trying to remain motionless in this position for at least 15 seconds. You can do five repetitions at each go. The skin around the eyes relaxes and strengthens by pulling the browbone, thus slowing down signs of aging.
