Happy World Jollof Week: All The Gist + Photos From The ‘JOLLOF’ Event By Eat.Drink.Lagos and Kitchen Butterfly

It was a Jollof kind of weekend and Lagosians loved it! Food and party are the surest things to bring people together in Nigeria. This weekend was no exception as Eat.Drink.Lagos partnered with Kitchen Butterfly to celebrate ‘JOLLOF’. The celebration which started with a private dinner hosted by Kitchen Butterfly, followed by a workshop on Jollof and its origins, concluded with a festival in commemoration of #WorldJollofDay which is celebrated on the 22nd of August.

According to the organizers,

“Jollof is a celebration of Jollof rice in all its incarnations and national varieties and all that can be Jollof-ed – think Jollof risotto, Jollof Arancini, Asun Jollof, Suya Jollof, etc.”

The festival which held on the 20th of August at the historic Jaekel House at the Nigerian Railway Compound, Ebute-Metta was sponsored by Guinness Africa Special and Maggi with the Jollof rice bar and Jollof education for the workshop and JumiaFood with vouchers. Jollof is the food for our favourite national pastime – partying. To say no Nigerian party is complete without Jollof is to overstate an understatement.

Jollof rice is a common dish in West Africa that derived its name from the Wolof people of Senegal, hence its undebatable Senegalese origin. Among the countries that consume this dish are Senegal, Gambia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Togo, Cameroon, Mali, and Ghana. However, two countries – Ghana and Nigeria – have adopted the dish as not only a cultural delicacy, but a subject of contention as to who prepares it best. We all know who wins this battle. Lol.
