‘Agbada’ – the three piece suit that never goes out of style

Once upon a time, only traditional rulers, chiefs and powerful men of high repute favoured the traditional Agbada ensemble. When the common man wore it, it was only on very special occasions like a man’s wedding day. But fast forward to the 21st century, Nigerians’ take on traditional fashion has evolved just like everything else. These days, you’ll see younger men rocking contemporary Agbada styles to all kinds of formal, religious and social gatherings, but the look is still most popular with grooms.

Although Agbada has its roots in the Yoruba culture, grooms from Hausa, Fulani and other Nigerian tribes are known to also rock Agbada styles for their big day. In recent times, the traditional Agbada attire has been modified to become a head turner by use of non-traditional fabrics, bold colours and unique cuts and designs. The statements being made get bolder and bolder each time you see a new groom.

The Agbada trend is currently topping Naija native styles, so to help our Style Ravens we have curated 10 ways a groom can rock this trend and be dapper on his special day.
