Celebrating Gabrielle Union-Wade At 48: Film, Family & Fashion

A life, style and culture writer with a borderline obsession…
American actress Gabrielle Monique Union-Wade is so many things and a whole lot of inspiration. As she turns 48 today, October 29, we’re taking a quick look back at her life through the lenses of film, family, and fashion.
Film
Gabrielle was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1972. By 1990, she had started her acting career with small roles in Television series before landing supporting roles in teenage comedy films She’s All That and 10 Things I Hate About You (1999). Fame came in 2000 when she acted in two now culturally famous films, Love and Basketball and Bring it On. Since then, Gabrielle has become a face to look out for in the film industry.
Family
In 2014, she married NBA player Dwayne Wade after dating for seven years and automatically became a stepmother to his three children. In 2018, their first child together, Kaavia James came into the world via a surrogate. Gabrielle used the opportunity to create awareness about infertility and reduce the stigma that comes with it for many women. This year, she wrote the children’s book, Welcome to the Party, inspired by her daughter.

Gabrielle Union is an actress and author and a voice-over artist, businesswoman, brand ambassador, and activist. During Barack Obama’s tenure as president, she was appointed to the National Advisory Committee for Violence Against Women. She also worked on his re-election campaign in 2012.
As a rape survivor herself, Gabrielle has been a fierce activist for rape survivors and therapy. In 2017, inspired by her journey, Gabrielle published the book; We’re Going to Need More Wine, which was named Best Book of the Year by a Black Author by The Root.
Fashion
Whatever sphere you meet Gabrielle Union in, it is clear that indeed, she is a force to be reckoned with, and that’s been the case with her fashion journey. In 2010, she launched Love & Blessings, a clothing line for plus-sized women. Union’s full-figured sister inspired the line, and by 2017, she returned with a collaboration with New York & Company, which has enjoyed much success to date.
When it comes to her personal style, it’s as eclectic as the multi-hyphenate. Gabrielle’s style is constantly evolving but easily adaptable. She is all for chic casual outfits with a bias for boots, bright hues, and haute black pieces.
Mrs. Union-Wade has spent a good part of the quarantine season dressing up and shooting indoors for one event, magazine cover, or fun family moments and sharing all the glam with her 16 Million+ followers on Instagram, us inclusive. While we can see her personality shine through in every look she wears, we can’t also deny the fact that her go-to stylist, Thomas Christos Kikis, does a great job creating the looks we’ve come to love on Gabrielle.
