Happy birthday Funke Akindele! Best known to many as Jenifa, Olufunke Ayotunde Akindele-Bello turns 43 today, August 24. The star actress shared her joy with the world through a series of stunning pictures on her Instagram page.
It is indeed a double celebration for Funke and her family as just yesterday she celebrated her wedding anniversary with husband, Abdulrasheed Bello, popularly known as JJC.
Funke gained traction on the Nollywood scene with her role in the popular family Sitcom, I Need To Know, which ran from 1998 to 2002. However, her big break came in 2008 with the comedy-drama film, Jenifa. Funke embodied the lead role of Jenifa, a young university student from a struggling background trying her hardest to fit in, to no avail. She stood out more than a sore thumb.
Her role as Jenifa was so good that it recurved critical acclaim and sold millions of copies as a home movie. Funke received four nominations at the 2008 Africa Movie Academy Awards and won the award for Best Actress in a leading role.
Since then, ‘Jenifa’ has become a popular franchise in the movie industry, with Funke going ahead to star in the sequel that was released in 2011 and a spin-off TV series, Jenifa’s Diary, that has run since 2014. Funke Akindele serves not only as the lead actress in Jenifa’s Diary but also as Executive Producer.
Jenifa aside, Funke has acted, produced, and directed a good number of comedy movies like Your Excellency, Omo Ghetto, Moms at War, Chief Daddy to mention but a few.
