1. Fireboy and Ed Sheeran’s ‘Peru’ debuts at No. 79 on the Billboard Hot 100

On February 8, Nigerian star, Fireboy DML’s Peru became the third Nigerian record debut on the Billboard Hot 100 in less than one year. It debuts at No. 79. This comes after the record peaked at No. 2 on the UK Official Top 40.

On January 24, the official UK charts announced that Nigerian star, Fireboy, is set to top this week’s Official UK Top 40, with ‘Peru (Remix),’ his globally appealing collaboration with Grammy-winning English superstar, Ed Sheeran. The official Instagram account for the charts wrote that, “Fireboy DML & Ed Sheeran are currently in the lead for this week’s Number 1 single, according to the Official Chart: First Look.”

Congratulations to Fireboy DML on this feat.

2. 2022 Oscars Nominations: Denzel Washington and Will Smith are up for Best Actor

The 94th annual Academy Awards nominations have been revealed and the lack of diversity has won yet again. Only three Black folks from major categories for the award ceremony were announced during the nomination event hosted by Leslie Jordan and Tracee Ellis Ross. King Richard, starring Will Smith, was nominated in six categories including Best Actor for his role playing Richard Williams. Aunjanue Ellis, who also stars in the film as Oracene ‘Brandy’ Williams, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

Denzel Washington’s stunning performance in the Joel Coen-directed The Tragedy of Macbeth, also scored him a nomination for Best Actor. This nod is now his 10th overall nomination at the Oscars as he continues his record as the most-nominated Black actor in Academy Awards history. Rounding out the very small list of diverse folks for the 2022 Oscars was Ariana DeBose who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Anita in West Side Story. Beyoncé’s Be Alive was also nominated in the Best Original Song category.

3. South Africa: Cassper Nyovest addresses whether he will be a guest on MacG’s podcast

Award-winning musician Cassper Nyovest has addressed whether or not he will ever be a guest on Macgyver ‘MacG’ Mukwevho’s podcast. Like many other South African celebrities, Cassper once vowed never to appear on the podcast, which constantly hogs headlines thanks to its controversial hosts. However, this past weekend, the hip hop star seems to have changed his tune on the matter following his initial answer to the question last year. A Twitter user suggested that if Cassper lost his upcoming boxing match against fellow musician NaakMusiq, he should be a guest on Podcast and Chill.

If you lose the fight with Naak or you draw, can you please go to MacG’s show bro. Come on,” said the tweet. “If I lose the fight with Naak, I will go on MacG’s podcast. If I beat Naak, I’ll never go on that show,” Cassper replied. In December last year, Cassper made it known he would never be on the show. It started when a Twitter user asked: “Are we likely to see you on Podcast and Chill with MacG?” “Never!” said the rapper. Last month, MacG was dragged for asking American singer Ari Lennox an inappropriate question. Fireboy dml peru billboard

4. Ghana fines Spanish firm $6m after deadly explosion

Ghana says the Spanish company in charge of a lorry that exploded last month and killed 13 people violated storage and transport laws. Maxam Corp has been fined $6m (£4.4m). The truck was transporting explosives owned by Maxam to a gold mine when it collided with a motorbike and blew up close to the town of Bogoso.

The blast destroyed the village of Apiatse, injuring more than 100 people. The firm denies responsibility, blaming a local contractor.

5. Augustine Eguavoen to remain in charge of Super Eagles on interim basis

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reversed its decision to appoint Jose Peseiro as coach of the national team and retained Augustine Eguavoen on an interim basis. Former Super Eagles captain Eguavoen led Nigeria to the last 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations – but Peseiro was expected to take over after the tournament.

However, the NFF has now confirmed that Eguavoen, 56, will remain in charge of the three-time African champions ahead of the two-legged 2022 World Cup play-off against Ghana next month. He will be assisted by former international Emmanuel Amuneke after a good showing by the team in Cameroon. Eguavoen, who is the technical director of the NFF, had backed the appointment of Peseiro as his successor at the end of the tournament.
