Rap Beefs Are Back: The Kendrick Lamar And Drake Beef Explained

It’s been a while since the rap world witnessed a heated rivalry, but Kendrick Lamar recently stirred the pot by reigniting his beef with Drake, not through social media spats, but with powerful lyrics. To borrow from the Jay-Z-era of old, “the summer’s about to get hot.”

Future and Metro Boomin’s highly anticipated album, “We Don’t Trust You,” already had fans buzzing, and Kendrick’s guest verse on the track “Like That” adds fuel to the fire, reminiscent of the energy on Christmas Eve. This verse feels like a sequel to his notorious “Control” verse from 2013, but this time, there’s no holding back; the gloves are off, and any semblance of camaraderie is gone.

Kendrick wastes no time in setting the tone, declaring his readiness for conflict, and challenging an unnamed opponent to step up and prove themselves. Although Drake isn’t directly named, a subtle reference to Drake’s song “First Person Shooter” and his album “For All the Dogs” suggests a targeted jab. In “FPS,” Drake boasts about surpassing Michael Jackson in Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 songs, a claim Kendrick now contests, positioning himself as direct competition by referencing MJ’s arch-rival, Prince, in his verse with a knockout blow: “Prince outlived Mike Jack.” Ouch.

The history between Kendrick and Drake spans over a decade, marked by tensions and occasional collaborations. Despite Drake’s early support for Kendrick’s career, highlighted by features and joint tours, underlying friction surfaced, notably after Kendrick’s infamous “Control” verse. Subsequent exchanges, both subtle and overt, have kept fans guessing, with each artist taking veiled shots in songs and interviews.

Amidst this rap rivalry, both Kendrick and Drake have maintained a close relationship with J. Cole, who often finds himself caught in the crossfire. While the trio has yet to deliver on the promised collaborative album, their interactions on “Wax” hint at a shared understanding amidst the competition.

In choosing Future and Metro Boomin’s platform to confront Drake, Kendrick adds another layer to the feud. Metro Boomin’s past issues with Drake, hinted at by deleted tweets and social media exchanges, amplify the tension. Kendrick’s decision to address Drake on a track produced by Metro underscores the seriousness of the confrontation.

But why would Future, known for numerous collaborations with Drake, allow Kendrick to take aim at his frequent collaborator on their joint project? Speculations about underlying tensions between Future and Drake, dating back to past incidents, add complexity to the situation.

Despite the drama, “We Don’t Trust You” stands out for its musical prowess. Future’s raw lyricism and Metro Boomin’s innovative beats elevate the album to new heights. While the feud commands attention, the album’s quality is undeniable, securing its place as a standout release of the summer.
