1. Donald Glover reveals that he’s creating a short film with Malia Obama

On Tuesday, April 4, GQ unveiled a new cover story with Donald Glover, who opened up about everything from his past achievements to what fans can expect from him in the future. Currently, the filmmaker is building Gilga, which is described as “his new production company/incubator/cultural library.” One of the projects being cultivated within Donald Glover’s production company is a short film that will come courtesy of Malia Obama, the daughter of Former President Barack Obama. Reportedly, it would be her second collaboration with Glover following her contribution to the Amazon Prime series “Swarm.”

“The first thing we did was talk about the fact that she will only get to do this once,” said the “Atlanta” talent in regard to mentoring Malia. “You’re Obama’s daughter. So if you make a bad film, it will follow you around.” Fam Udeorji, one of Glover‘s creative partners at Gilga, also chimed in on Malia’s inclusion. “Understanding somebody like Malia’s cachet means something,” he explained. “But we really wanted to make sure she could make what she wanted — even if it was a slow process… It’s more about diversity of thought than just, like, diversity for optics.”

2. Angelique Kidjo becomes 3rd African to win the Polar Music Prize

Multi-award-winning Beninese music legend Angelique Kidjo has become only the third African to win the prestigious Polar Music prize. The Polar Music Prize, which is also tagged the Nobel Prize of Music, is a Swedish international award founded in 1989 by Stig Anderson, best known as the manager of the Swedish band ABBA, with a donation to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. The annual award is given to one contemporary musician and one classical musician. Benin Republic’s music legend Kidjo has become the latest recipient of the prize. She was announced as the 2023 winner alongside Chris Blackwell from the United Kingdom and Arvo Pärt from Estonia.

Speaking on the recognition, Angelique Kidjo said: “To be awarded the Polar Music Prize is humbling. I have no words to say how important this is for me. It comes with a sense of responsibility that is bestowed upon me as an artiste to continue to do great work. I will do my best to be a proud recipient of the Prize through my work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, on behalf of the children, and as an ambassador of music, to help create a world in which we can all live in peace.” Kidjo joins South Africa’s Miriam Makeba who won in 2002, and Senegalese Youssou N’dour who won in 2013, as the only Africans to have won the Polar Music Prize.

The SABC, Primedia, and Anele Mdoda’s production company Rose and Oaks have teamed up to develop and broadcast a local version of “The Masked Singer.” The singing competition, which is based on the Korean “King of Masked Singer,” sees media personalities, thespians, and politicians take to the stage singing well-known songs while donning full-body costumes and masks to hide their identities. Singer J’Something, media personality Somizi Mhlongo, social media sensation Sithelo Shozi, and comedian Skhumba are the first season’s celebrity panel of detectives who will guess who is behind the mask.

Anele and her partners, Paul Buys and Frankie du Toit, have carefully selected every element of the show, from the costumes to the host and the panel of detectives. The Masked Singer South Africa launches in the second quarter of 2023 as a weekly show.

4. Cash App founder Bob Lee reportedly stabbed to death in San Francisco

Bob Lee, the tech executive who co-founded the mobile payment service Cash App, was reportedly found dead in the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 4. Sources say the mogul was fatally stabbed in Downtown San Francisco. Around 2:35 a.m., the San Francisco Police Department responded to a stabbing in the 300 block of Main Street. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 43-year-old man with multiple wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital but later died as a result of his injuries.

While police did not publicly identify the deceased, those close to the Cash App tycoon told the press that the man was indeed Lee. Josh Goldbard, CEO of MobileCoin, confirmed Lee’s passing in a statement. The attack happened near Rincon Hill and the Bay Bridge. So far, no arrests have been made.

Our condolences go out to his loved ones.

5. Erling Haaland returns to Man City training

Erling Haaland has returned to Manchester City training ahead of the club’s crucial upcoming fixtures against Southampton and Bayern Munich. The Norwegian suffered a groin injury during City’s 6-0 win over Burnley in the FA Cup on March 18, which left him sidelined for more than two weeks. He was forced to withdraw from the Norway squad for the 2024 European Champions qualifiers against Spain and Georgia, and also had to sit out City’s Premier League encounter against Liverpool. Pep Guardiola’s side romped to a 4-1 victory over the Reds in Haaland’s absence, but he is now set to re-join the squad.

City confirmed the striker’s return to training in a short video on social media with the caption: “@ErlingHaaland is back! 👀” Haaland has been in terrific form since he joined the reigning Premier League champions from Borussia Dortmund last summer, scoring 42 goals in 37 matches across all competitions. He will now seek to help City close out an unprecedented treble, with the league title still up for grabs alongside FA Cup and Champions League honors.
