The first batch of Pfizer vaccines containing 325,260 doses arrived in South Africa shortly before midnight on Sunday amid strict security measures, health minister Zweli Mkhize said in a statement. He mentioned on arrival that the entire batch was transported initially to a central warehouse while they sent samples to the National Control Laboratory for quality assurance. After clearance, they intend to distribute it to the various provinces.

Regarding the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, the department has received communication that the doses awaiting dispatch in Gqeberha are expected to be released around the middle of May.

4. Ghana: Gyakie is the first African singer to join Spotify’s global Equal’s music program

Spotify recently unveiled its EQUAL hub in celebration of International Women’s Day. On the heels of this launch, the leader in all things audio will now extend its global commitment to fostering equity for women in music with its new EQUAL Music Program.

Spotify’s inaugural class of EQUAL artists kicking off the program includes Ghanaian Afrobeats & Afro-fusion singer Gyakie, who is the first African creator to be selected for the program. The 20-year-old singer who recently released her debut EP “Seed” has not only gained popularity in Ghana but in Nigeria and Kenya, where her single “Forever” is a chart-topping fan favorite, with its remix featuring Omah Lay not far behind.

5. Lewis Hamilton wins Portuguese Grand Prix after spectacular overtakes

Lewis Hamilton fought back to pass both Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen for a brilliant victory in the Portuguese Grand Prix. The seven-time champion fell to third as Verstappen’s Red Bull overtook him at a restart after an early safety car. But he passed Verstappen four laps later and then hunted down and did the same to his Mercedes team-mate before moving on to control the race. The win gives Hamilton an eight-point championship lead over Verstappen.

It was a statement race for Hamilton, who has moved on to 97 career Grand Prix victories, and a clear demonstration of his unquenched desire to secure a world record for eighth world title this year. But he missed out on the point for the fastest lap after both Verstappen and Bottas pitted for fresh tires to chase it in the closing laps.
