1. Nigeria: Buju adopts new name, BNXN

After stamping his footprint in the Nigerian music scene with his array of hit singles, features and his debut extended playlist, “Sorry I’m Late,” Buju has transitioned from his old moniker to a new name, Bnxn (pronounced Benson, his surname). The surprising twist is part of the singer’s strategies for industry distinction, as his name has constantly caused confusion among fans due to the similarities with acclaimed Jamaican music veteran Buju Banton.

In a statement released by the singer, Bnxn, the transition is also part of his journey to self-discovery. Upon his breakout into the Nigerian music scene, in 2019, Bnxn signed with Burna Boy’s Spaceship Records label, before leaving to pitch camp with his own label, To Your Ears Entertainment.

2. Gabrielle Union and daughter Kaavia become pro soccer team owners

Gabrielle Union is welcoming a new business venture into her portfolio and she’s getting her daughter, Kaavia involved. According to reports, the actress and entrepreneur and her 3-year-old are now part-owners of the Angel City FC professional women’s soccer team. The soccer franchise was founded in 2020 and has a mission rooted in changing the narrative around diversity in sports ownership.

The team’s last round of financing included investments from the mother-daughter pair, Christina Aguilera, Olympic Gold Medalist Shawn Johnson East, and more. With the move, Kaavia is now the youngest team owner in pro sports.

Actress Pearl Thusi was left speechless after American icon Queen Latifah sang her praises after her stunning performance in the recently launched Netflix film, “Wu Assassins: Fistful Of Vengeance.” Pearl has been getting rave reviews since the film, which is streaming on Netflix, came out on Friday. While the whole movie seems to be getting thumbs up, it was Pearl’s performance that impressed Queen Latifah — so much so she had to let her know.

The US rapper, singer, and actress took to Twitter to let Pearl know just how much she admires her. Queen also expressed her desire to one day work with the actress. Consequently, the South African expressed her gratitude for Queen’s kind words.

4. Ethiopia starts generating power from River Nile dam

A controversial Ethiopian dam on the Blue Nile river began generating electricity for the first time on Sunday, according to state TV. The $4.2bn (£3.8bn) dam, located in the western Benishangul-Gumuz region, has been a source of contention between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan since its construction started in 2011. Sudan and Egypt fear the project could reduce their share of Nile waters. Ethiopia insists the dam is key to its development. The so-called Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (Gerd) is Africa’s biggest hydroelectric project to date.

The Gerd is expected to generate over 5,000 megawatts of electricity, doubling the nation’s electricity output when it is fully completed. It’s currently 83.9% complete, the state-owned ETV News channel said on Sunday. The Ethiopian government insists it will transform the national economy, which has been severely damaged by drought and war, when it is fully operational.

5. Aubameyang score first goal since signing to Barcelona

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his first Barcelona goals as they extended their unbeaten run in La Liga to nine matches with victory at Valencia. Aubameyang, who joined from Arsenal for free on February 2, was making his first start in La Liga and he slammed in the opener from Jordi Alba’s pass. Frenkie de Jong tapped in a second and Aubameyang converted from close range, despite a VAR check for offside. Carlos Soler pulled one back before Pedri curled home superbly from range.

Substitute Pedri’s strike may yet be given as an Aubameyang goal – that would secure his hat-trick – because the ball flicked off the Gabon international’s back on its way to the net. Aubameyang could also have achieved a hat-trick late on when a ball fell his way in the box, only for home keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to deny the 32-year-old.
