On Dear Class of 2020, Beyoncé delivered a stirring 10-minute speech to graduates. She spoke about the recent protests surrounding the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery as well as shared her secrets to success and the importance of ownership. Beyonce Speech
“You are achieving things your parents and grandparents never could imagine for themselves. You are the answer to a generation of prayers.”
Beyoncé advised graduates to be thankful to their families and the little community that supported them and also to believe in themselves as she did when she started her own company a decade ago. She said creating her own lane was challenging in an entertainment business that is still very sexist and male-dominated.
As her speech came to a close, Beyoncé reminded the class of 2020 that every thought in the mind is powerful, every word spoken is powerful, every action has consequences for them and their communities. Beyoncé also said the protests have already made an impact. |Beyonce Class of 2020 Speech
“Look what you’ve been able to do in the last 14 days. We’ve seen the power of the collective. We’ve seen what happens when we join for the same cause. Please, continue to be the voice for the voiceless.” Beyonce Speech
After urging them to let this current moment push them to improve themselves in all areas of their lives, she asked them not to criticize others for what they’re not doing. She also encouraged them not to let any outside distraction or their own insecurity stop them from their goals. She then finished off her speech with prayer and more words of encouragement. “I pray that you continue to celebrate and value lives that appear different from your own. I know you are ready to start one of the most important journeys of your life. You are on the brink of a huge world shift. Look how far you’ve come and how much you’ve contributed. Keep pushing. Forget the fear, forget the doubt. Keep investing, and keep betting on yourself. And congratulations.”
