ith the collision of fantastic events that took place last week, it’s no surprise that Black celebrities took the term “beauty” on a joyride, interpreting it in ways they deemed fit. While the diverse renditions could have easily resulted in an out-of-sync commotion, the looks, somehow, managed to be cohesive enough to form a united Black girl beauty anthem. From the Met Gala to the Gold Gala, to the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, the best makeup and hairstyle submissions were authentic, sassy, and dang creative.

The 2024 Met Gala was undeniably the center for some of the best makeup looks we’ve seen so far this year and the breeding ground for trends that are sure to shake up the scene. Of all the offerings submitted at the event, a look that has lived rent-free in our heads was spotted on Taraji P. Henson. In a smart move that did justice to the dress code, “The Garden of Time,” Henson bloomed delightfully in pastel pink. Her doll-up, created by Saisha Beecham, featured pink eyeshadow, soft pink lips, and matching blush, pushed further with well-filled brows and witchy lashes. Then, to reiterate the code, pink roses gracefully adorned her updo to an outstanding effect.
Also, the purple fairy showed up at the Met and left shimmers of pixie dust in her wake. But if you were too distracted by the bells and whistles to notice her presence, she made sure to leave her beautiful mark on Lizzo. For one of the Met Gala after-parties, the singer made an unmissable case for purple that spoke of mystical charm. Her makeup look, one of the best of the night, saw shimmering purple eyeshadow, matching blush, and glossy lips pair nicely with uber-thin 90s-inspired brows and winged liner.

They said, “elegance infused with a hint of avant-garde,” and Keke Palmer responded with an appropriate hairstyle. Her sleek high-top ponytail, created by celebrity hairstylist Tamika Gibson, was a proper accompaniment for her frayed, embellished Marc Jacobs gown, which she stunned in at the Met Gala.
