ast week, the 2024 Met Gala smoked out the stars in museum-worthy pieces that sprinkled flavor on the global fashion atmosphere. As expected, some took the dress code, “The Garden of Time,” literally, while others represented it with more subliminal offerings. Irrespective of the approach, the ensembles punched hard enough to knock our socks off, providing a sumptuous buffet of fashion that satisfied our appetite.
However, one would think that after a tedious Met moment for the stars and their glam team, the streets would be deserted and the beds occupied. But the 2024 Gold House Inaugural Gold Gala and the African Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, among other engagements, kept the stars outside in befitting ensembles. It was a week filled with inspiring looks and tenacious individuals who never skipped a style beat.
The Looks
There were two types of representations at the Met Gala: the literal and figurative team. Singer Janelle Monáe took the latter route in a fit that gave a nod to the fictional belief of the time-reversing abilities of certain crystals. She shimmered in a sultry Vera Wang crystal-adorned halter gown with opalescent laser cut paillettes, hand-strung crystalline beads, and sustainably recycled plastic bottles hand molded into organically shaped flowers. Playing on the time aspect of the theme, while everyone hopped on the garden bandwagon, was an out-of-the-box move.
In addition, the 2024 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards was nothing short of awesome. Water and Garri movie star, Tiwa Savage stole the sparkle from the night sky in a shimmering, floor-length, gold cut-out dress that was hard to ignore. Featuring a corset bodice, the creation hugged her frame perfectly as its crystal tassels danced with every move. Indeed, few can compete with the red-carpet serves of the African Bad Girl.
