1. Ayra Starr makes history after debuting on Billboard 200 chart

Nigerian singer-songwriter Ayra Starr is celebrating a monumental achievement, becoming the first female Nigerian artist to debut on the coveted Billboard 200 chart. Her sophomore album, “The Year I Turned 21,” landed at No. 195 on the chart, marking a significant milestone for both the artist and Afrobeats music.

This accomplishment comes after a whirlwind first week for “The Year I Turned 21.” The album, released on May 31, garnered critical acclaim for its genre-bending sound and impressive artistry. It shattered records on Spotify, achieving the highest opening day streams for a Nigerian album by a female artist globally (6.3 million) and the biggest opening day for a Nigerian album on Spotify Nigeria (1.2 million streams).

While Burna Boy holds the record for the highest-charting Nigerian album in the U.S. with “Love, Damini” at No. 14, Ayra Starr’s historic debut paves the way for a new generation of female Afrobeats artists to conquer the American music market.

2. Tory Lanez’s wife files for divorce after less than one year of marriage

Rapper Tory Lanez’s marriage appears to be over before it even began. Raina Chassagne, Lanez’s wife and the mother of his son, has filed for divorce after less than a year of marriage, according to court documents. Chassagne cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split. The couple were married on June 25, just weeks before Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Megan Thee Stallion.

The documents also reveal that Chassagne is seeking sole legal and physical custody of their seven-year-old son, Kai. Reports say that Chassagne has been bringing Kai to visit Lanez in prison, but she now wants full custody with visitation rights for Lanez. Lanez, who is currently in the first year of his sentence, has not yet commented on the divorce filing. This news comes as the rapper pursues an appeal of his conviction.

3. David Beckham appointed as an ambassador for the King’s Foundation

David Beckham has told of his excitement at being made a charity ambassador by King Charles, following a visit by the former footballer to the monarch’s country home. Reports say that Charles has given Beckham the royal appointment after the pair bonded last year over a shared knowledge and love of the countryside. Beckham was formally appointed as an ambassador of The King’s Foundation, which focuses on creating better communities where people, places, and the planet can coexist in harmony, at the beginning of the month.

A source told the media: “The King and David Beckham have really bonded over their similar interests. This is a massive thing for him and he’s delighted. He is really passionate about his new role.” Beckham enjoyed a glittering football career with teams in the UK, the US, Spain, and France. He now co-owns soccer team Inter Miami, which recently signed superstar Lionel Messi for his career swansong. Beckham’s life and career were recently documented in a four-part Netflix hit series.

4. Rick Ross previews collaboration with Blaqbonez

American rapper Rick Ross is giving fans a taste of what’s to come with a new collaboration featuring Blaqbonez, a rising star in Nigeria’s Afrobeats scene. On Monday, Ross offered a brief preview on his Instagram story, showcasing Blaqbonez’s verse on the yet-to-be-released song. This exciting announcement follows Ross’s earlier statement on his desire to create an entire album focused on African music.

This isn’t the first time Ross has shown appreciation for African culture. Back in February, he expressed his admiration for African food and music, sparking speculation about a collaborative project. In the same period, he gave a shout-out to Nigerian artists Portable and Odumodublvck, hinting at his interest in Afrobeats. He even joined Odumodublvck on an Instagram live session for a crash course in the genre.

The upcoming Blaqbonez collaboration is likely the first of many for Ross’s African album. He’s also mentioned Nigerian Grammy-nominated star Ayra Starr, Ghanaian dancehall artist Stonebwoy, and Tanzanian superstar Diamond Platnumz as potential collaborators.

5. Jude Bellingham becomes the new face of SKIMS Mens

English football prodigy Jude Bellingham has added another accolade to his growing list of achievements after being named the new face of Kim Kardashian’s shapewear brand, SKIMS. The 20-year-old Real Madrid midfielder will be fronting the campaign for the brand’s recently launched men’s underwear line. Bellingham’s selection comes at a perfect time, riding a wave of success after his recent Champions League victory with Real Madrid and his inclusion in England’s squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament. The campaign features photos and videos of Bellingham sporting SKIMS’ Mens Cotton and Stretch collections, showcasing both comfort and style.

“The opportunity to be featured in SKIMS Mens latest campaign is incredible,” Bellingham is quoted as saying. Kim Kardashian echoed the sentiment, praising Bellingham’s influence on the sport and his status as a rising icon. This isn’t the first time SKIMS has tapped into the world of sports for its men’s line. The brand has previously collaborated with other sporting heroes like Neymar Jr. and Patrick Mahomes.
