Kerry Washington has had such a year – in fact, we all have – and she has worn so many hats so far that she continues to make the news for it. Last Thursday, Kerry took to her Instagram to share the first look into her jewelry collection, launching the next day. The Lioness Jewelry collection in collaboration with Aurate.
Three years ago, Sophie Kahn and Bouchra Ezzahraoui quit their full-time jobs to concentrate on building their jewelry brand, Aurate, New York. About that time, they met and became friends with Emmy Award-winning actress, Kerry Washington.
In a phone interview with The Zoe Report, Kerry Washington shared that this jewelry collection was inspired by the Egyptian warrior goddess, Sekhmet. The name Sekhmet translates to ‘she who is powerful’, and she was recognized for having a woman’s body and a lion’s face.
The pieces are in their way supposed to signify the power of femininity. “It’s no longer a man saying ‘Buy this beautiful necklace for your wife’, Kerry said. The line consists of 100% recycled gold necklaces, bracelets, and hoop earrings, all of which can be decorated using the Lioness pendant.
Apart from choosing to empower women with their choice of jewelry, 20% of the proceeds from each buy goes to an organization that Kerry Washington is passionate about, SuperMajority. The group is dedicated to helping women collectively find their power and organize around change as well as ensure a more equitable future for women.
It’s a beautiful thing to see more women creating products for women with a view to making the world a better place for women. Congratulations to Kerry and the Aurate New York team!
