When you think of planning a Nigerian wedding or a party, the first thing that comes to mind is showcasing the Nigerian culture with gorgeous Aso Ebi styles and flamboyant colors. Although the Aso-Ebi concept started in Nigeria, many African countries have started to embrace it.
In a bid to understand the ever rising aso ebi trend and culture, Battabox presenter Odunayo speaks to a fabric merchant in Lagos, Nike Atobatele, the CEO of VOS Fabrics who speaks extensively on Aso-Ebi and why Nigerians are so obsessed with it.
Just like many Nigerians have come to know, Nike emphasizes that “aso ebi makes your event colorful and gives guests a sense of belonging”
“What is in vogue now is tulle lace,” says Nike “A lot of people come to ask for this,” she continues as she shows Odunayo a really beautiful lace fabric.
Although cost is a keen issue as the prices of some of the exquisite fabrics are quite high, it seems the bigger challenge in picking out the perfect aso ebi lies in the variety of styles and colours one has to select from. So it often boils down to the aso ebi merchant helping the bride or celebrant through the use of a colour card.
“If you want to wear ankara and you don’t want plain ankara, you can go for this,” says Nike as she points to one of the latest Ankara fabrics which comes adorned with lace trimmings and other embellishments.
