1. Angela Bassett accepts Honorary Oscar at Governors Awards

A year after Angela Bassett was quite frankly robbed of the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, the star has finally got a gold statue of her own. On Tuesday, the 65-year-old actor was awarded an honorary Oscar at the 2024 Governors Awards in Los Angeles. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) governors award the honorary statues to individuals who have exemplified “extraordinary lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy,” per the Oscars website.

Bassett earned her second Oscar nomination last year for her spine-tingling performance in 2022’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” in which her matriarchal character, Queen Ramonda, deals with losing her son, King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman). Last year’s nomination is not Bassett’s first taste of Oscar defeat, either. She was nominated in 1994 for playing singer Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” but lost out to Holly Hunter for “The Piano.”

2. Tiwa Savage announces debut movie will be released on Prime Video this year

Popular singer Tiwa Savage has joined the movie industry both as an actress and producer. The mother-of-one said her debut movie, “Water and Garri,” would be released later this year with her as the lead actor. She explained that the movie will be released via streaming giant Prime Video and shown in over 240 countries and territories worldwide. She wrote, “Guys, I’m so excited to announce that my first feature film #WaterAndGarri will be released this year through @primevideo and shown in over 240 countries and territories worldwide!”

3. South Africa: Black Coffee involved in severe travel accident

Internationally renowned DJ and music producer Black Coffee was involved in a severe travel accident while on a flight en route to his scheduled show in Mar Del Plata, Argentina. On Tuesday afternoon, a statement was shared on the Grammy award-winning artist’s social media pages to the effect. “The incident resulted in unforeseen complications and left him with some injuries,” read the statement.

“We can confirm that he is receiving the best possible medical attention and is surrounded by a supportive family and team. In respect of his privacy, we kindly request understanding and patience from the media and his fans. Despite the challenges presented, Black Coffee is optimistic and recovering well!” It is not clear when the incident actually happened, but the DJ has been performing in Brazil for the first few days of 2024.

Nigerian music stars Adekunle Gold and Yemi Alade are set to bring their impressive talents to the soundtrack of the upcoming Hollywood movie, “The Book of Clarence.” The award-winning singer and songwriter Adekunle Gold will appear on the song “Jeezu” alongside American rappers Doja Cat and Kodak Black. Meanwhile, multi-award-winning hitmaker Yemi Alade features on “Sacred Love” alongside Jeymes Samuel.

The soundtrack album, which is set for release on January 12, alongside the movie will feature guest appearances from international music superstars including Jay Z, Jorja Smith, Lil Wayne, Shabba Ranks, Kid Kudi, and Buju Banton.

5. Trent Alexander-Arnold out for three weeks with knee injury

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been ruled out for “probably three weeks” with a knee injury, says assistant manager Pep Ljinders. The England international, 25, suffered the injury during Sunday’s 2-0 FA Cup third-round win against Arsenal. “Trent hyperextended his knee, so he has a little tear in the lateral ligament of his knee,” said Lijnders. “He had a scan. He will be out for probably three weeks. It’s a big blow. We will really miss him.”

Lijnders added, “We will have to find new dynamics without him because he made our game flexible. Even in bad spells, he was the one putting the balls where we needed the difference. He will get some rest and then hopefully he can come back to where he was. Because this guy was decisive in all the games and was the one who created constantly for us from deep.”
