1. Angela Bassett to receive honorary Oscar

Angela Bassett will receive an honorary Oscar at this year’s Governors Awards. The Academy announced on June 26 that Bassett, along with Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton, will receive honorary awards at this year’s Governors Awards. In addition, Michelle Satter will be awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Bassett is coming off her second-ever Oscar-nominated performance in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” While she seemed like a favorite to bag the prize, it ultimately went to Jamie Lee Curtis for her performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” The 14th Governors Awards will be held on November 18.

2. Burna Boy named BET Awards’ ‘Best International Act’ for record fourth time

Famous Nigerian singer, Damini Ogulu, aka Burna Boy, snagged the “Best International Act” award at the 2023 BET Awards held on Sunday night in Los Angeles. The “Last Last” crooner defeated French singer, Aya Nakamura, British superstars, Ella Mai, Stormzy, and Central Cee, and his compatriot, Ayra Starr, to clinch the award. With his victory, the African Giant extended his record as the most-awarded person in the BET Awards’ “Best International Act” category, claiming a total of four wins.

Burna Boy won the award for three consecutive years (2019, 2020, and 2021). Since the creation of the “Best International Act” in 2018, the category has been exclusively won by Nigerians, with Davido being the maiden winner. Meanwhile, Nigerian music star, Tems took home the award in 2022. 

3. South Africa: Kelly Khumalo and Mthokozisi Yende fuel dating rumors after pictures of their family outing trended online

It’s been weeks since Kelly Khumalo welcomed her baby girl. The talented singer confirmed the arrival of her bundle of joy by sharing snaps on her Instagram page. However, fans have wondered who the baby’s father might be seeing Khumalo had never posted anything about him. The singer and her rumored baby daddy, Mthokozosi Yende, were spotted out and about this past weekend. Although the two never confirmed they were together, social media investigators concluded in the affirmative after scrutinizing the pictures the stars posted on their respective pages.

4. Busta Rhymes honored with Lifetime Achievement Award at 2023 BET Awards

Busta Rhymes was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2023 BET Awards. Marlon Wayans and Swizz Beatz presented the honor to the 51-year-old at the Microsoft Theater following a tribute video of Busta’s journey recognizing his impact as a rapper, songwriter, record producer, and actor. “All right. So, I’m going to wear it on my sleeve. I do want to cry,” Busta said before he broke down into tears during his speech.

“I was the youngest one of the Leader of the New School,” he continued as he recalled the beginnings of his career and the impact his former rap group’s breakup had on it. The icon also spoke on fatherhood and how it pushed him to be great. The prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, which was established in 2001 with the first annual ceremony, honors industry GOATS who have significantly shaped culture through their extensive careers.

5. Ilkay Gundogan leaves Man City to join Barcelona on free transfer

Barcelona have announced that Ilkay Gundogan will join the club once his contract with Man City expires at the end of the month. Gundogan, who is the captain of Manchester City, has brought an end to a seven-year stay with the Premier League side and will move to Barcelona once his contract at the club expires. Gundogan will sign a two-year deal with Xavi’s side, with the option for a third year, after a season where he led the Citizens to the treble.

Gundogan’s move to Barcelona will add to Xavi’s midfield options during a summer where Sergio Busquets has left the club. The veteran has opted to follow Lionel Messi in moving to MLS side, Inter Miami. Barcelona confirmed the transfer in a statement via the club’s official website.
