A fashion and pop culture writer who watches a lot…
Compared to the 2019 Met Gala theme, the 2018 Met Gala theme was very specific; heavenly bodies. This year’s theme was self-interpreting but also very limiting and probably challenging. Asides the limits, celebrities showed up in style and memorable costumes.
The Met Gala, an annual benefit event for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is considered one of the world’s biggest fashion events. It is known for its elite guest list, its high-priced tickets and – most of all – its lavish outfits, based on a different theme each year.
This year, the theme was ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ and it coincided with an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art based on the 1964 essay written by fashion writer and political activist, Susan Sontag. The article was against interpretation and perfectly explained “Camp” as a fashion term. It also solidified Sontag’s place as a critic.
The works of designers from Virgil Abloh to Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Rei Kawakubo, Mugler, Bob Mackie, Karl Lagerfeld, and more were featured in the exhibit. A large part of the exhibition took a huge dive into how “irony, humour, parody, theatricality, and exaggeration are expressed in fashion.”
“Camp” is a means of self-expression that challenges the everyday life. It means outfits are not supposed to be basic, everyday pieces put together. They should be bold, loud, colourful and beyond the norm.
The outfits at the 2019 Met Gala hosted by Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, Alessandro Michele and Harry Styles were, like the exhibition, “full of irony, humour, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality and exaggeration.” This is owing to the fact that the theme was open to a whole lot of interpretation.
Just as some celebrities went above and beyond to follow the theme, like always others didn’t but still delivered some pretty amazing looks. We’ve curated some of the most exaggerated, bold or unnatural looks which nailed the theme of the night.
