Halima Aden Is The First Model In A Hijab And Burkini For Sports Illustrated Swimsuit

A fashion and culture enthusiast who's really a food loving…
Halima Aden has consistently broken barriers. From being the first Muslim homecoming queen at her high school to being the first woman to wear a hijab in the Miss Minnesota USA Pageant and making it to the semi-finals in 2016, the Kenyan born model of Somali descent does not seem to be slowing down.
This time, Halima has made history once again by being the first Muslim model to wear a hijab and burkini in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit. This is exciting news because the issue has always been known for having covers and spread of scantily clad bikini models. For this issue which will be out by May 8th, the team decided to make a trip to the birthplace of the model and the shoot took place at Watamu Beach with photographer Yu Tsai.
According to SI Swimsuit editor MJ Day,
“We believe beauty knows no boundaries. I admire Halima, and I consider her an inspirational human for what she has decided to use her platform for and her work with Unicef as an ambassador. She is, in my opinion, one of the great beauties of our time, not only outside but inside. When we met, I was instantaneously taken by her intelligence, enthusiasm and authenticity.”
