Budding Fashion Label Bijelly Couture Flags “The Travel Collection” for SS 2017 | SR Review

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]ractical, slightly commercial and quite uninspiring are a few words that describe Bijelly Couture‘s recent release of a not-so-cohesive range for Spring/Summer 2017. It is funny how a handful of Nigerian designers now pull a range of not so coherent garments off their racks and try to shove it down our throat all in the name of creating a collection. While it is important for a fashion designer who is out for business, it is also necessary not to forget that you carry the title “designer”, meaning you have the responsibility of being an original (regardless of how that word doesn’t exist from a philosophical translation) and who you are and what aesthetic you carry should reflect in the garments you create. Unfortunately I find all of that missing in this SS17 narrative.

According to the designer,

The Travel Collection (TC) is not just meant for the holiday seeker but rather the lady who strives for effortless style with bold fashion punctuations…The TC is a rack full of conversation starters, each piece interpreting unspoken dialects, yet universally understood. A must have of fashion essentials, the TC comes with hints of print, lace and crystal stoning in sweat pants, floaty dresses, bomber jackets, lacey jacket tops, cold shoulder dresses, jumpsuits , Barbie dresses and more. Whether a day out at the beach with friends or sipping champagne on the patios of Venice, Bijelly Couture has redefined the fashion norm this season with promises of minimal fuss and maximum compliments.”

While I totally appreciate her effort at creating a very wearable line centered around the trending Ankara phenom, you will agree with me that these garments only hide behind the confines of fine words that still does no justice to the entire range. Just before I am labelled bitter or petty, I will leave the verdict on Bijelly Couture’s new collection to our Style Ravens.
