Chanel Pre-Fall 2019: The Latest Métiers d’Arts Collection Pays Homage To Ancient Egypt

Just by taking a look at the overall presentation, there is no doubt that the Chanel Pre-Fall 2019 collection was inspired by ancient Egypt. On Tuesday, December 4th, underneath the ancient Artz Temple of Dendur which was a gift from Egypt to the United States, Chanel debuted its latest Métiers d’Arts collection. This is the first runway show to take place inside the museum in 36 years.
From the graphic lines around the eyes of the models to necks adorned in Egyptian necklace collars and heads topped with Nefertiti-crown-like hats, Karl Lagerfeld paid literal homage to ancient Egyptian culture. As always, Karl over did it and we love it! The show was made complete with Chanel’s brand ambassador, Pharrell Williams, walking the runway.

The collection which featured top models such as Kaia Gerber, Anok Yai and Adesuwa Aighewi, opened up with a series of tweed jackets with coat-hanger shoulders. Just like old Egypt, there were lots of gold throughout the collection; from the lapels of jackets, trim on dresses and skirts, the colour of heels and knee-high boots and not to leave out, the bright gold headgears.
The outfits combined a bit of Coco’s Paris with 1980s New York City and ancient Egypt vibes. This combination produced the looks of a polished woman who loves chic suits and is a master mistress in the art of layering. The collection presented only two men’s looks and the aesthetic separation between human and costume was artfully blurred. Denim, pyramid-shaped bags, power dressings, feathers, knits, a stylish ode to the graphic two-dimensional silhouettes found on hieroglyphs and more made up the designs and details of the Chanel Pre-Fall 2019 collection.
But gold was not the only dominant colour in the collection. The collection also had ivory, coral, scarab blue and more with scarabs appearing in jewels and as evening minaudières. There were lots of croc-embossed leather, as the brand notably announced it would be ditching exotic materials in its collections.
