Paris Fall-Winter 2018 Haute Couture Fashion Week is officially over and as per the usual, designers did not disappoint with their collections. Elie Saab is one of those designers who delivered looks that makes you wonder what else they have in stock. Little wonder they were one of the designers that ended the fashion week season with Mayowa Nicholas walking the show.
The Elie Saab AW 2018/19 collection titled ‘Of forms and light’ could not have been given a more apt name as it features a rich variety of colours ranging from dusky pink to forest green and deep purple. Romantic silhouettes, with rich textiles and intricate details defined this collection. The designer used frills, ruffles, passementerie bobbles and sparkling embellishments to create a dreamy feel, with sheer fabrics adding a touch of ethereal beauty.
The collection was inspired by Elie Saab’s recent trip to Barcelona, and Antoni Gaudí’s architectural masterpieces. It is definitely a collection perfect for the red carpet, glamorous evening events and balls, a bride’s wedding or reception dress as well as bridesmaids dresses. Each piece was an opulent sartorial journey, with jumpsuits and gowns with luxurious drapery as well as full skirts and trains constructed to flatter the female form. Fabrics such as brocade and silk gazar gave a regal feel to the collection, with delicate gold embroidery and swathes of sequins illustrating Saab’s signature fairytale aesthetic.
Elie Saab’s latest haute couture collection can safely be described as pieces of wearable art with plays on architectural lines that include stronger shoulders. The jackets were asymmetrical, with basque and bare shoulder with the silhouette emphasizing unapologetic femininity and delicacy.
The prints were few but with a rather refined palette where plant, mineral and water motifs express themselves through embroidered lace, braids and 3D applications. Elie Saab’s Spanish vibe collection comprised of dramatic sleeve design, extending from a corset on the body to envelop the arm in a lattice-like structure, which called to mind the shapes on the face of the famous Catalan cathedral.
